Give 1 Get 1 Program to Deliver OLPC XO with Delays and Shortage in US and Canada

The non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) has announced they can not deliver OLPC XO laptop for poor children according to schedule. And they have to face a shortage in the US and Canada caused by this production delay.

Fortunately, this shortage is not related to row material like the problems Dell faced or Apple faced. The problem has happened because of finding some bugs in some last-minute of delivering.

So, if you have donated money for this program, you can not be sure that you will get your OLPC on Christmas time.

The non-profit organization scheduled to produce the $188 string-pulley-charged XO laptop at a Chinese factory in October, but it has been postponed by November 12.

As you know the fourth quarter of the year is the busiest time at computer plants in China. The factories have to produce the mass of laptops and PCs for computer makers such as HP, Dell and Apple.

According to Yahoo news, “it would now be tough to get those laptops to South America by December, and also meet orders for the recently announced OLPC’s Give 1 Get 1 scheme for people in the United States and Canada, said Mary Lou Jepsen, chief technology officer for the OLPC Foundation.

Jepsen said some laptop customers in the United States and Canada would be able to get their PCs before the holidays, but they would be shipped on a first-come, first-served basis.

The string-pulley-charged XO laptop has got impressive specs.

It features a multi language keyboard that switches between languages, a digital video camera, wireless connectivity and Linux open-source OS.

The display can be viewed in direct sunlight and switches from color to black-and-white.
This XO laptop needs just 2 watts of power compared with a typical laptop's 30 to 40 watts, and has flash memory and 4 USB ports to add memory devices.

One of the innovations the group has done is experiment of a device that uses cows to generate power to charge its battery.

Wooden USB Key and Keyboard; Touchless Keyboard for Impaired Users

In this entry you can get acquainted with two sorts of keyboards and a USB key.

One is a wooden keyboard and USB key for who love wood and wants to have a set of wooden implements. In Japan, a wooden keyboard with new set of Wood USB key and lacquered USB key has come out by Hacoa Company.

This company makes every device related to computer with wood from pen drive to Keyboard Stand and keyboard. For this, you will have to spend almost 200€ to get the keyboard, or between 37€ to 67€ for a USB key.

These wooden keyboard and USB key are really cute.

The second keyboard is really useful. Touchless keyboard has been made for impaired users. You just need to gesture with your head and you will not worry if you have to use your fingers. Well, it is some amazing because you know that a full size keyboard has 102 keys and typing or using other keys with only gesturing looks so odd.

Yet, I am so happy that impaired users can hope to use computer more undependably and feel more ease with this vital device. Unfortunately it is very expensive. It costs $2500.

Dell to Use New Version Linux Ubuntu 7.10 on Its Laptops and Desktop PCs

This week (Oct. 18), Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) released to provide several enhancements over its predecessor Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) and Dell is going to release its new Linux-based laptops and Desktop PCs with Ubuntu 7.10 preinstalled.

The date of shipment is not clear yet as Dell is taking time to get the optimal interoperability from new OS and its laptops and desktop PCs.

John Hull, Dell's manager of Linux OS engineering has explained in Dell official web log, Direct2Dell:

In particular, much of our testing has focused on the following areas: graphics (laptop native resolution support, monitor compatibility), wired/wireless networking, suspend/hibernate, laptop webcams, audio, and touchpad mouse scrolling, to name a few. We have also focused on performing OS upgrade testing, to make sure the OS upgrade process is as smooth as possible for Dell customers. As always, our goal is to have Ubuntu 7.10 'just work' when installing it on supported hardware, and I think customers will have a very good experience using the OS on our supported hardware.

The users who have Ubuntu 7.04 on their laptops or computers can easily update it to Ubuntu 7.10 via Update Manager. These upgrades to the latest version of Ubuntu will be entirely free of charge.

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 7.10 is 384MB of memory for desktop CDs, and 256MB for other installation methods. (Note that some of your system's memory may be unavailable due to being used for the graphics card), according to Ubunto release note.

For getting further information, keep in touch.

The LCD panel is the Main Reason of Asustek Eee PC Price Rise

Eee PC got publicity not only because of its highlight features but because of its exceptional price, $199. But Asus could not act to its promise. The first Eee PCs are sold around US$358 (NT$11,655) in Tiwan at online retailers. Also, Eee PC is coming to the US market with the prices of $399 for the highest configuration, Eee PC 8G model and $299 for the lowest configuration, Eee PC 2G Surf.

Now the main question is: where is the $199 Eee PC?

Today, Asus tried to explain the main reason of this increasing the retail price. The 7" LCD panel of Eee PC has made this problem. The price of this LCD rose sharply during the first half of 2007.

Digitimes wrote:

As demand for small- to medium-size LCD panels was running tight during the first half of 2007, prices for 7-inch panels increased to US$30 during the second quarter, compared to less than US$20 at the beginning of this year, noted the sources. The quotes are far more expensive that those expected by Asustek.

The average selling price (ASP) for a 7-inch panel is presently at around US$28, the sources noted.

Well, this is not the first time that this problem has happened. OLPC is a famous laptop that has the title of $100 laptop. But because of the currency fluctuations, and rising prices of some components like nickel and silicon the price of this laptop jumped to $200.

At first Asus expected the price of $199 with 7-inch panels with an ASP of US$18-19 but, it didn’t come true. Now Asus has to deal with the LCD panels with the new price of each $30.

Naturally with this opportunity that has been given to WiMax the productions related to this technology will increase and the international prices of its equipment will decrease.

PC World explains the current 3G systems:

3G is dominated by WCDMA, the next step on the migration path from GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). But the ITU-R has also recognized CDMA-2000, the 3G upgrade to CDMA networks, and TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code-Division Multiple Access), developed in China, as well as other technologies
.

WiMax is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard. It promises to provide longer range Internet connections than the current Wi-Fi as it can broadcast up to 40 miles.

Samsung new Laptop LCDs: 1White-LED Backlight & 2 LCDs with 16:9 Aspect Ratios

Today, Samsung has announced three new widescreen displays for laptop computers:

-Two LCD displays with a true 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio suitable for watching movies, TV shows and new-age gaming,

- An active White-LED (light-emitting diode) backlighting that boosts picture clarity and reduces power consumption.

Samsung will release the 16:9 displays in half of next year and the White-LED backlit panel in the second half of 2008.

Image link: Akihabaranews

The two new LCD displays with 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio are 16" and 18.4” screens means they come with new diagonals which are not popular among laptops. They delivers virtually the same rich colors as an LCD TV with color saturation levels of 60 percent for the 16-inch model and 90 percent for the 18.4-inch model. The current LCDs have color saturation levels of 40-50 percent.

You should know that 16:9 aspect ratio are used in the most LCD HDTVs. So, if you laptop get one of these two LCDs you will get rid of searching a HD TV for watching your movie or when you play your game. Right now many laptop displays use the surrent standard of 16:10 aspect ratio.

Both LCDs feature an 800:1 contrast ratio, 8ms (millisecond) response time and 262,144 colors.

Samsung compares these two new LCDs with current laptop displays:

When the source video is 16:9, a 16-inch HD LCD will reproduce movie images at 114 percent better screen efficiency than that of those provided by a 15.4-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Similarly, an 18.4-inch full-HD LCD allows users to watch a movie with an image that is 124 percent better screen efficiency than that of a typical 17-inch model and about the same efficiency as a 19-inch model.

The third laptop display is a 15.4" diagonal LCD with an active, White-LED backlight. This new LED backlight display consumes power 40 percent less than a typical LED backlight. (This is really impressive!)

LCDs with an active LED backlight features a brightness level of 300 nits with 1,440 x 900-pixel resolution and ten times (10,000:1) the contrast of current laptops’ displays.

Samsung explains about the power consumption of this active LED backlight in its Press release:

Already, backlight units (BLU) using LEDs can operate on less power than conventional BLUs, which use cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs). CCFL BLUs remain fully lit all the time, while an active LED BLU illuminates the screen selectively, according to the image being displayed. Light areas project varying degrees of light, while dark areas are turned off. As a result, power consumption is greatly reduced and the contrast ratio is improved tremendously.

In the pictures you can see the full spcs of these three LCD laptop display.

Price of N810

The estimated price is $479 and it going to hit the market next month.

At first glance, it seems that the price is a bit expensive. Well, for many consumers in Asia, the price can be a bit too expensive. You know that Nokia sells a lot these days in countries like China and India. However, N810 is not for everyone. Even in USA and Europe, not all the consumers would become eager to spend $479 for a mobile phone set.

Nokia n810 and Linux

In the tech specifications, I could see that Nokia used Linux technology.

ExtremeTech wrote:

The N810 has a web cam, media player (including Rhapsody support), e-mail, contacts book, and a terrific Web browser. It has 2 GB of storage built in, and comes with an SDHC slot supporting up to 32 GB of add-on memory. You can listen to music through a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and it supports pretty much every music and video format out there (except for DRM-protected media other than Rhapsody). Since it's Linux based, it can also run dozens of apps developed by a community Nokia has nurtured since its first, geeky tablet. Prop it up using the built-in stand on a table, and it can even work as a digital photo frame.

N810 and Multimedia Facilities

I have seen a number of pictures of n810 and I liked the design and the color of this phone. These days, most wireless devices are rich of multimedia facilities. Nokia n810 is not an exception to this. You can enjoy music for hours. Of course, you can get connected to Internet and enjoy audio and video from Internet. Even if you are not connected to Internet, you can have 45 hours of music playback and memory to store up to 7,500 songs on an optional 10GB memory card.

N810: The iPhone Killer?

iPhone came to the market a few months ago and it is still the hot gadget in the market. It seems that Nokia has brought n810 to steal the show from Apple ahead of Christmas.

I enjoy using the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet for web browsing from the couch and for making Skype calls. I would use it even more if I didn’t have so many mobile devices floating around and think it is a great mobile terminal. Nokia just announced the Nokia N810 as a successor to the N800. The N810 will be available in mid-November for US$479 and it looks like there is another candidate for my self-purchased Christmas gift.

Once considered attractive only to Linux geeks, Nokia's latest Internet Tablet has the potential to be a formidable competitor to both the iPhone and Ultra-Mobile PCs. It's more open to third-party apps than the former and much more affordable than the latter. The N810's most notable improvements include integrated GPS functionality, a full Web-browsing experience (complete with Ajax and Adobe Flash 9 support) and a slimmed-down metal design with a slide-down keyboard. At $479, the price is still a bit steep for the masses, but based on our week with a preproduction device, we think many more consumers will be interested in this machine than in previous models.

So, this Christmas, many people will think of buying a N810 for themselves and for others.

I am giving the official press release of Nokia N810 here:

Microsoft Not Fighting Antitrust Case in South Korea

Microsoft is the richest company in the world and Bill Gates loves to be the best in everything. So, he always tries to take Microsoft in the level that no company can compete. For this, Bill Gates is ready to try every way. Well, sometimes, this aggressive drive of Bill Gates is not admired by every one. That is why; there have been a number of cases against Microsoft in different parts of the world. In South Korea, almost two years ago, South Korea's Fair Trade Commission ruled that Microsoft unbundle its messaging service from its Windows software.

I am giving a bit of the history from BBC:

The antitrust ruling in South Korea followed allegations raised by internet firm Daum Communications that Microsoft was breaching antitrust rules by selling a version of Windows that included its instant messenger software.

"Windows' Media Server, Media Player and Internet Messenger services were blocking competition and leading to a monopoly in the market," said the Fair Trade Commission's chairman Kang Chul-kyu following the announcement of the ruling.

Microsoft was "raising the entry barriers to PC server and operating system makers, hurting the interest of consumers" he said.

Microsoft at that time was not happy with the ruling of South Korea's Fair Trade Commission. It tried to fight the ruling in the court. However, Microsoft has now taken a opposite attitude about the matter.

IHD reported:

Microsoft Corp. said Tuesday it has submitted a request to withdraw a court appeal against an antitrust ruling by the Korea Fair Trade Commission.

"It is important to note that Microsoft remains committed to Korea and continues to work closely with the FTC to ensure that Korean consumers benefit from vibrant competition in the IT industry," Microsoft in a statement.

The statement also said that the company had submitted the withdrawal request to the Seoul High Court. It did not elaborate.

What next for Microsoft in South Korea?

Pre-order Mac OS X Leopard Now; Start Buying on October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Apple

At last, Apple has released its hot new version OS: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Right now, you can pre-order this software at Apple’s online store. And it will go on sale for just $129 (for a single user license) on October 26 at 6:00 p.m. at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. If you have more than one Mac at home, you can choose the five-user Family Pack with the price of $199.

With this Leopard you can get more than 300 new features such as new look to the desktop, Finder, Quick Look, Time Machine (automatic back up), Mail, iChat, Safari 3, Parental Controls, Boot Camp, Web Clip, an enhanced Dictionary with Wikipedia built in, a newly updated iCal with multi-user calendaring, an updated version of Front Row and the complete Boot Camp release, previously available only as a beta.

It installs easily, and works with the software and accessories you already have.

According to press release, “Leopard introduces a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; and Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac.”

Engadget today had a small talk with Brian Croll, Senior Director of Mac OS X Product Marketing, about today's Leopard release announcement.

Brian Croll has mentioned following statements about new features coming in the nest release:

-Users who bought Apple machines from October 1st on can participate in Apple's Up-To-Date Program, which provides free Leopard upgrades (for $10 shipping).

-Boot Camp's beta Assistant software expires at the end of 2007, meaning Tiger users that want to continue editing / creating Windows partitions on their Macs need to do so before January, or upgrade to Leopard. Post-January you'll still be able to boot to the partitions you've created, though.

-Users shouldn't expect expanded sync capabilities between Mail.app and the iPhone, although it looks like you'll be able to read iPhone notes on your desktop machine now.

-File system is, indeed, still HFS+; OS X now supports read-only ZFS, as we'd heard.

-Don't forget to peep the new features / changes list on Apple's site.

-Call us crazy, but with a 6:00PM Friday launch we think you should expect lines -- but not for Apple to sell out.

As you know Leopard needs a minimum of 512MB of RAM and runs on any Macintosh computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor. If you want to know about “full system requirements”, you can read here.

Hitachi to Make 1Terabyte Hard Drive for Laptops & 4Tetrabyte for Desktop PCs

Hitachi has developed new HDD which is for laptops and desktop PCs by using Nanotechnology. By using this technology Hitachi could achieve to world’s smallest read-head technology for hard disk drives to expect to quadruple current storage capacity of HDD up to1TB on a laptop hard drive and4 terabytes (TB) on a desktop hard drive.

Hitachi explains the details in its press release:

Researchers at Hitachi have successfully reduced existing recording heads by more than a factor of two to achieve new heads in the 30-50 nanometer (nm) range, which is up to 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair (approx. 70-100 microns). Called current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magnetoresistive1 (CPP-GMR) heads, Hitachi’s new technology is expected to be implemented in shipping products in 2009 and reach its full potential in 2011.

This is really amazing! Having 1 TB hard disk on laptop is like that saying I have unlimited hard disk!

Hitachi is going to show off this achievement at the 8th Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Conference (PMRC 2007) which has started from yesterday at the Tokyo International Forum in Japan.

All Good Sides of Dell XPS M1730 are:

-Chassis is rock solid.
-Integrated Ageia PhysX Card. The Ghost Recon 2, Inferno, CellFactor: Revolution, Unreal Tournament 3, and Warmonger games get very good advantage from this facility. It's supposed to take such elements as weight, velocity, and force into account. In other words, in a game, a wall won't just be knocked down; rather, the wall will collapse according to how the character hit it, how much the character supposedly weighs, and how much force was applied. These effects also apply to items falling into water and making an appropriate-sized splash, or the ability for a soldier to shoot his weapon down stairs instead of just straight ahead.

- The 2.8-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo X7900 is over-clockable to 3.4 GHz, means it has Frequency-adjustable facility.
-SLI graphics from nVidia.
-Excellent performance numbers, even with Vista.
- Huge storage with fast rpm and numerous hard drive options.
- Offering Rapid Driver Update program

- The options of Blu-Ray Combo and Blu-Ray writer

- WUXGA display with 1,920-by-1,200 resolution. The display is glossy and crispy and it also has anlti-glare. Wide viewing angles are useful.

-LED fireworks coming from all fronts. It can be used to control volume, media playback and effects. The LEDs will even pulsate synchronously to music played over Windows Media Player, iTunes, and WinAmp

- There is a small gaming LCD on the keyboard deck that shows the condition of game. For example depending on the game you play, it shows a character's health and life or how many bullets you have left. Also, it shows information about your CPU and RAM utilization, with a countdown timer, stopwatch, and date and time stamps. All of which can be cycled through a button next to the display

- There are playback buttons in the front bezel and Dell's Media Direct button. Media Direct is a nice alternative to using Windows Media Center; it can play back movies, organize your photos, and work in a preboot state to conserve your battery.

-Dell Quickset software adjusts the colours for each speaker and the logos individually.
-Configurable speakers to have different effects and colors

-Backlit keyboard with silver color and a white light that you can easily toggle off with a Function-key press. The keyboard is better than Dell XPS M1710 laptop’s.

The keyboard is spacious, and comfortable. The number pad is in the right way. There are large Power button and Media Direct function for access to media without booting Windows and a button to the right to quickly change modes. The XPS touchpad has been moved some to the left and it remains centered on the space bar.

- A 2.0-megapixel webcam above the screen.
-Hi-def output of DVI
- It supports EV-DO or HSDPA mobile broadband

According to ecoustics, the 26,983 3DMark03 is excellent but it is lower than Alienware Area-51 m9750 with score of 34,585! The PCmark05 of this Dell laptops scored 6,940 which is one of the best.

According to PC World:
In WorldBench 6 the Dell XPS M1730 scored 85, a very nice score, though not quite as good as Dell's own XPS M1330 notebook.
In 3DMark 2006 it scored a very powerful 8033, more than enough to run most current games to run with medium to high quality settings.
3DMark 2001 SE got blitzed by a score of 27,792.

In the encoding test it also did well, achieving scores that are beginning to show notebook CPUs are comparable to desktop CPUs. Using iTunes to encode 53 minutes worth of WAV files to 192Kbps MP3 files took just 75 seconds and in Cdex (which uses only one core of the CPU) it took 110 seconds.
Battery test results weren't all that impressive. In our DVD rundown test, where we loop a DVD until the battery drains, the XPS M1730 lasted only 69 minutes.

According to PC Magazine:
On SYSmark Preview 2007 Overall, the M1730's scores were 10 percent better than those of the Alienware m9750, which loads Windows XP Professional.

It also finished Photoshop scripts and video-encoding tests 14 and 26 percent faster, respectively, than the Alienware did. But with all the lighting effects and power-consuming components, the 85-Wh battery lasted only 1 hour 26 minutes on MobileMark 2007 tests, though that's understandable for a gaming laptop.

3D Mark06 test: Dell XPS M1730 ( Core 2 Extreme X7900, NVIDIA GeForce 8700MGT) scored 9982 and ALienware M9750 ( Core 2 Due 7600, NVIDIA GeForce Go7950GTX SLI) scored 9595.

According to notebookreview:
3DMark06 test: Dell XPS M1730 (Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz, 2x Nvidia 8700M-GT 512MB graphics card) scored 8,019 while Alienware M9750 (Intel Core 2 Duo T7600 2.33GHz, Nvidia go 7950 GTX video cards with 512MB) scored 7,308, and Sager NP9260 (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo E6700, 2x Nvidia GeForce Go 7950GTX video cards with 512MB DDR3) scored 9,097 ( better than this laptop) and the predecessor laptop Dell XPS M1710 (2.16GHz Core Duo, nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX 512MB) scored 4,744.

According to Laptop Magazine:
Gaming scores are very good: 152 frames per second on F.E.A.R. at autodetect settings that's just slightly behind Alienware's 161 fps on its Alienware M9750.
3DMark03 test: Dell XPS M1730 (2.8-GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900, Two Nvidia GeForce Go 8700M GT (SLI)) scored 26,983 while Alienware M9750 scored 34,585.
3DMark06 test: Dell XPS M1730 scored 8,064 while Alienware M9750 scored 8,706.
PCMark05 test
: Dell XPS M1730 scored 6,940 while Alienware M9750 scored 5,552.

All Bad Sides of Dell XPS M1730 are:

-It would be better that the screen was on the bezel of the display, not the keyboard deck
- Two USB ports fewer than its predecessor means XPS M1710.
- There is no an HDMI port which is odd.
- There is more expectation about the quality of speakers.
- Only one year of support comes standard, however the extended warranties are available.
- DirectX 10 performance too dependent on driver support
- There is no finger print reader
- Battery life is so short.

Comparison between Dell XPS M1730 and Sager NP9260:

-Sager comes with Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.66GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 1066FSB) or Intel Core2 Extreme X6800 Desktop Processor 1,066 FSB w/4MB L2 but XPS M1730 comes maximum with Intel Core 2 Extreme X7900 (2.8GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache).

- This Dell laptop has only Raid for 2 hard drives but Sager NP9260 has RAID 0/1/5 with three hard drives but Dell laptop has SSD option.
- M1730 has the Blu-Ray drive option but Sager doesn’t have.
- Sager NP9260 has got 7-in-1 media card reader but M1730 has only 8-in-1 media card reader
- M1730 has LED Backlit option which Sager NP9260 laptop doesn’t have.
- The Graphics card of Dell laptop is higher.
-Sager has extra Built-in TV Tuner and Remote Control facilities.

Comparison between Dell XPS M1730 and Alienware Area-51 m9750:

- The Alienware has the same graphics card of Sager which is lower than Dell’s one.
-The Alienware laptop has the optional integrated coaxial TV tuner which Dell laptop doesn’t have.
- The ALienware Laptop is based on previous Napa platform but Dell Laptop is based on Santa Rosa platform.
- The Alienware has 4-in-1 media card reader a bit less than Dell laptop
-The Alienware has SLI mode and Blu-Ray drive and SSD options like Dell laptop.
- The Alienware is cheaper than Dell laptop.

Toshiba is fighting hard with its rival over HD DVD. You know that Toshiba is promoting HD DVD technology. Of course any new technology at first is very expensive and laptops with HD DVD were out of the reach for most ordinary consumers. However, the price is falling down and by the end of 2007 the consumers can have a laptop with HD DVD for less than $1000.

Yahoo wrote:

Since HD DVD was first installed on a Toshiba Qosmio earlier this year, prices have fallen precipitously on notebooks equipped with an HD DVD drive. That early notebook debuted at $3000; today's prices hover at around $1500.
By the end of the year, in time for Christmas, said Pinto, "you'll be able to buy notebook computers at retail stores for under $1000."

Many consumers will be very happy to see that they can get HD DVD in cheap and budget laptops. Now, I am waiting to see what Sony will do with its Blu-Ray. Recently Sony released a Blu-Ray optical drive “Optiarc” for mid-range laptops with the price of $999. This optical drive uses Blu-ray technology but works with Standard CDs and DVDs. And yet, you see it is very expensive.

Christmas Shopping: MacBook is Ahead of iPhone

There are just over two months left before Christmas and the holiday shopping season has just started to be hot in USA. USA is the largest Christian country and the richest country on earth. So naturally, it has the largest shopping market for Christmas. Shops and companies wait whole year for Christmas shopping.

iPhone from Apple came to market in the end of June 2007. So, it is still a fresh product and many people would love to buy an iPhone for themselves and their loved ones in this Christmas. That is why many experts expected that iPhone will be one of the hottest products in Christmas shopping.

However, the bad news for Apple is that iPhone is not the hottest product in Christmas shopping. In a survey, it was found that iPhone was ranked fifteenth in the holiday shopping demand. It is surely bad news for Apple but, there is good news too. In the same survey, MacBook was ranked in the eleventh position.

So, Apple can now celebrate that it has two products in the top 15th. Apple is hoping that many families in America will have an Apple product this Christmas. It will increase the visibility of Apple as a brand in USA.

OLPC Give 1 Get 1 Program in Partnership with Brightstar

OLPC is now no longer a dream but it has become a real gadget. Already, it is in full production and some children are using it in different parts of the world. OLPC organizers are eager to make sure that many people can get these cheap laptops. However, it is not possible for them to go door to door and supply the laptops to ordinary consumers. That is why; OLPC has entered into partnership with Brightstar for sales and distributions. This will make sure that these cheap laptops will reach many people in USA and Canada in the first stage.

From next month, consumers in USA and Canada can request OLPC laptops and they will get their laptops by Christmas time.

Businesswire wrote:

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a non-profit organization launched in 2005 by MIT Media Lab founder Nicholas Negroponte to design, develop and manufacture a laptop computer for children in developing countries, announced today that Brightstar, a global leader in customized distribution and supply chain solutions and long-time OLPC partner, will distribute the revolutionary XO laptop to individuals in the U.S. and Canada who participate in OLPC’s recently announced Give 1 Get 1 program.

Starting on November 12 and for two weeks only, the public will be able to pay US$399 for two XO laptops, getting and giving one simultaneously. On a first come, first served basis, individuals who participate in the Give 1 Get 1 program will start to receive their XO laptops by Christmas. For more information on this program go to www.laptopgiving.org or call 1-877-70-LAPTOP (1-877-705-2786).

This is a good strategy by OLPC organizers and I am sure that this will make OLPC more popular.

Steve Ballmer Defending Windows Vista against an Analyst

Windows Vista is not a brand new product anymore. Few months have already passed after Vista came to the market. Some people are happy with it while others are not. Steve Ballmer is trying to satisfy the skeptics and he is talking about the good sides of Windows Vista whenever is getting any opportunity.

Engadget has reported about one such incident when Steve Ballmer had a tough time to convince an analyst called Genovese. Genovese is not only an analyst but also a mother. Her daughter wanted her that to install Vista and she listened to her daughter. However, her experience with Vista was not smooth and she wanted to go back to Windows XP.

So, she challenged Steve Ballmer about the usefulness of Vista. Steve Ballmer tried to convince her that Windows Vista had a lot of new things to offer. He also felt that service pack1 of Vista has answered many of the common complains that users have against Vista.

Have you used Vista yet? Do you think that Vista is much better than Windows XP or should other users stick to their XP?

Sony’s Optiarc Cheaper Blu-Ray Optical Drive for Mid-Range Laptops Released

BLu-Ray optical drives are very expensive ones with new technology, but how come if mid-range laptops can get Blu-Ray Optical Drive? Sony and NEC worked together and brought up new optical drive called Optiarc.

Optiarc is the first Blu-ray Disc playback drive for laptop computers with mid-range models.

Image link: Reghardware

Optiarc's BC-5500A uses Blu-Ray technology but like a standard DVD burner, it writes one single-layer DVD±R/RW, dual-layer DVD±R, DVD-RAM and CD-R/RW media at up to 8x, 4x, 5x and 16x speeds, respectively.

It is now available and is priced at £165 ($335/€238) inc VAT.

Reghardware talked about another optical Drive by Sony for Desktop PCs:

Sony also introduced a new desktop BD drive, the BWU-200S. This one can burn BD-R and BD-RE media too, with BD-R recording speed running at 4x - though only 2x for BD-RE.
The drive is due to go on sale in the US in November for around $600.

Samsung SPH-P9200 UMPC: Details Leaked; No Bluetooth

Samsung SPH-P9200 UMPC is an attractive UMPC with new style. This ultra mobile PC has two parts: one is whole UMPC with touch screen display, battery, camera … everything except Keyboard and ports; the second part is a foldable keyboard with big keys (opposite of all UMPCs that have uncomfortable cramp keyboard with small keys) and ports placed asides. First, when you see this UMPC, it is small and like a tablet PC, you can open it. And then you can unfold the keyboard.

This UMPC First was announced end of last year, but now you can know about its specification:

Processor: Via C7-M CPU
Memory: 512MB RAM
Hard Drive: 30GB hard drive

Display: 5" 800x480 display (and higher resolution interpolated modes)

Network: Wi-fi, Wibro and HSDPA; no Bluetooth
Ports: 15 pin accessory port (unclear. Could be for headset, dongles)
Port replicator (2xUSB, power, LAN, VGA)

OS: Windows XP Home edition.
Battery: Standard battery (20Whr, 2-2.5hours); Extended battery (40whr, up to 5 hours)

Others: Camera, 1.3mp; SIM card slot; Deluxe Launcher with enhanced systems tray; Includes Samsung MyPen software; Icon lens and MyZoom software; Optical joystick (and mouse buttons); foldable keyboard

The highlight features of Samsung SPH-P9200 UMPC are:

- Its design is very new and different other UMPCs

- The resolution of this 5" display is enough

- The display is Touch Screen

- It supports mobile broadband technology (HSDPA)

- It has got ample memory and decent hard disk

- It has mouse buttons

- It has comfortable foldable keyboard with big keys

But unfortunately, there is no Bluetooth option. Bluetooth can be very useful for this device as it is a small one and the ability of using wireless peripherals can be useful for this small computer. Also there is no clear if there is the option of flash memory, which can increase the speed of booting up and performance and you know that SSDs are more protective for data.

Another problem with this UMPC is battery. The standard battery is not enough for a quite portable device.

In the following you can see a video of this UMPC it was recorded at GITEX 2007.

Seagate Momentus 5400 PSD: Huge Hybrid HDD with 256MB Flash memory

Seagate has launched its new Hybrid Hard Drive for laptop users and reasonable price;
Momentus 5400 PSD 2.5-inch hybrid HDD. With 160GB of storage and 256MB embedded Flash memory this Hybrid HDD costs $190 means 30% more expensive than a traditional drive of equal storage. Other capacities include 80GB and 120GB will be available later.

Also, Sony VAIO SZ650 is the first laptop which gets this hybrid HDD.
Momentus 5400 PSD saves 25% battery life, boots a PC faster by 20 percent and uses half power of a traditional HDD.
The drive has spinning at 5400rpm and uses a 1.5 GB/s SATA interface.

InformationWeek reports:

Samsung started shipping its hybrid flash/hard drive in March. Samsung and Seagate offer the same size drive, but Samsung also sells models of 80 Gbytes and 120 Gbytes. Over the next 10 years, Seagate plans to offer hybrid drives as an option across its entire line of disk drives for notebooks, desktops, and ultramobile PCs, Johnson said.
Seagate and Samsung have been working with Microsoft (MSFT) to take advantage of technology in Vista that can leverage their hybrid drives. ReadyDrive in Vista treats flash and disk as one memory space, so it can be used for caching frequently needed data, or as a disk-write cache when the disk is spun down in order to save battery power.

Soon, all the new laptops will have Vista OS preinstalled and using flash memory to enhance the speed of boot up and overall performance will become vital for every user. Although the price of hybrid HDD 30% premium over the traditional HDD, it is affordable for many users.

What do you think about this new HDD?

Some included features: 'New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup. Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista. New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module - the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services. New "Black Hole Router" detection - Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data.

Additionally, Microsoft is trying to finish the story of fake and pirated copies of Windows XP. It has introduced a new licensing program called "Get Genuine Windows Agreement". By this project, “resellers can offer to their business customers a volume licensing contract that will allow them to replace fake or "mislicensed" copies of Windows XP Professional with legitimate versions” according to InformationWeek.

Apple Macbooks are stylish and attractive. But how come if your Apple Macbook is golden fully! It would be very beautiful, wouldn’t be?

A company called Computer Choppers has tried to make this idea practical. It has coated a MacBook Pro in golden color. Even the keyboard and touchpad’s color match to chassis means it is golden too. But the most expensive part of this design is the Apple Logo. It has been filled by diamond.

Well the company has not talked about the price but it is clear that this beautiful and odd MacBook Pro is among the most expensive laptops.

Uruguay to Buy 100,000 OLPC XO Laptops; OLPC Preferred to Intel Classmate

Uruguay is going to buy 100,000 OLPC XO laptops for the children with the price of US$199 for each.

First the government arranged both Intel Classmate and OLPC laptops for the children of Uruguay's Florida province. The children worked on both for five days and voted. The result was interesting. They preferred OLPC to Classmate laptop. They gave 56.84 points to OLPC and 53.06 points to Intel classmate laptop.

I am quoting some lines from OLPC news:

Now the findings are not official yet, as all the bidders have five days to contest the process, but this is a stunning upset for Intel and a resounding confirmation for OLPC. LATU will be purchasing 100,000 laptops for children, with an option to buy 50,000 more, at $199 per laptop.

Image link: OLPC news

And also Projecto Ceibal wrote:

Brightstar [Uruguay with OLPC XO's] began the process by offering their computer at US$205; Positivo at US$ 274 (in their open-source Linux offering) although this unit had more memory and functionality. Latu negotiated on price, and finally the OX went down to US$199 and Intel's unit to US$258.

Brightstar's offer only includes teacher training and tech support, in addition to an additional 1% supply of machines for replacement purposes due to wear and tear. In addition, this design allows for parts that can be replaced by the children themselves.

Unfortunately the Price of OLPC laptops have become exactly double but I am happy that developing countries try to arrange this facility for their children yet.

University Class: Laptop vs Pen and Paper

University life means freedom but at the same time, we have to attend classes and we have to respect our professors. This is the age of gadgets and laptop is a must device to carry all the time in daily life. Students are now fan of laptops for different reasons. Laptop is their portable device for knowledge and entertainment. So, many students carry laptops in the university classes. However, they can do two things. Those who are serious love to use laptops for taking class lectures and other good things.

On the other hand, many students are abusing this device by browsing internet. They often open video sites or multimedia files and that destroys their attention for the class. The worst part is that they often forgot to mute their laptops and all the students get disturbed with the sound of the laptops.

So, some professors in USA are taking an extreme measure of banning laptops in the classrooms. In fact, they are trying to ban any gadget with keyboards. They love to get back to the age of pen and paper. I am in favor of using laptops in the classroom but I agree with these professors. They are doing the right thing.

What is your idea about it?

Asus Postpones the Shipment of Eee PC till End of October

Asus is postponing launching its hot mini laptop, Eee PC. Asus has explained that the reason of this delay is gaining more power in the market and expanding its software applications.

After getting good feedback about pre-installing Linux OS on this laptop, the company decided to add Linux-based software applications too.

Digitimes wrote:

Asustek noted that after testing the company gained many comments. Thus, it decided to add Linux-based software applications to the Eee PCs. This is the major reason the company is pushing back the launch of the products, said the company. Asustek indicated that it expects to ship Eee PCs soon, adding the launch should be no later than that of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC)'s latest plan in November.

Before Eee PC launching officially, AllAsus Retailer and NCIXUS retailers have started selling different models of Eee PC online in their website. The first retailer deliver the laptop ion October and the second one two weeks after ordering.

Microsoft Extends XP sales for Five months until June 2008

Microsoft plans to extent the schedule of XP sales another five months. So, transition to Windows Vista will happen from end of June 2008.
The reason of this delay is very simple. Yet there are many consumers who want to buy and use Windows XP OS.

Yahoo wrote:

Microsoft said it decided to extend XP sales in response to feedback from computer manufacturers who said there were customers who still wanted to buy the older operating system.
Some customers have voiced displeasure with Vista due to a lack of compatibility with existing software programs and devices. The hardware requirements needed to run Vista also are a significant upgrade from many older computers.

Microsoft believes that Vista is the fastest-selling OS in the history of the Company. And Of course Vista has not brought satisfaction for all consumers. Yet, laptop makers such as Dell release some of their new laptops with Windows XP.
