Nvidia’s Bonus for Intel: Intel X58 MotherBoard to Get SLI without nForce 200 chip

Professional gamers always wish to use their computers’ NVIDIA graphics cards in SLI mode with their Intel motherboard, but they can not usually use Intel motherboards and SLI together. Rather, Intel chipset fits with ATI graphics. The reason is very simple. Nvidia has imposed motherboard makers to use its nForce 200 chip for adding SLI support.

But this tradition seems to change for a while. Nvidia has announced that mere Intel’s X58 MotherBoard will get support for SLI without supplying the nForce 200 chip.

In this way, the motherboard will offer only dual x16 slots or one x16 and two x8 slots.

X58 is the motherboard will be used for Nehalem platform or Core i7 in desktop PCs.

Thus, the professional gamers who require full bandwidth will have to deploy the nForce 200 chip, anyway. With the nForce 200 chip the motherboard will be able to provide the full x16 bandwidth across three slots.

Samsung X360 First Impression: Challenging Air; Thinner and Lighter than Envy 133 and ThinkPad X300

Samsung X360 is a new Ultra portable laptop hitting the market in September onwards. The market of Ultra portable laptops has seen tremendous demand since Apple’s MacBook Air caught the attention of people. MacBook Air redefined the concept of ultra portable laptops and improved the taste of consumers. Following MacBook Air, other famous vendors tried to use the new technology to make very thin and lightweight ultra laptops with artistic designs.

HP’s Voodoo Envy 133 and Lenovo’s ThinkPad X200 and ThinkPad X300 and today’s Samsung X360 ultra laptops have tried to challenge MacBook Air with their lightweight, thinness, better features and fabulous modern designs.

Already I have compared MacBook Air with Envy 133, 12-inch ThinkPad X200, ThinkPad X300 and Toshiba Portege R500 that you can read them in the following entries:

-Lenovo Launches ThinkPad X200- A Serious Rival for MacBook Air With 0.8-in thickness

-ThinkPad X300 Gets Review, Benchmark and Comparison with MacBook Air

-HP’s Voodoo Envy 133 vs. MacBook Air vs. ThinkPad X300; First Review and Video

-Which one is Thinnest: Toshiba Portege R500 or MacBook Air?

Samsung X360 ultra portable laptop is based on Centrino 2 like ThinkPad X200 and sports a 13-inches bright glossy LED-backlit display (1280 x 800) as well as a Centrino 2 ULV processor.

Following Macbook Air and Voodoo Envy 133 laptops, Samsung X360 doesn’t provide any built-in Optical drive either, but TinkPad X300 come with built-in optical drives

Samsung X360 is powered by 1GB of RAM up o 4GB, a 64GB or 128GB SSD or option for a 5400RPM 120GB HDD and an integrated Intel’s X4500 graphics card.

The Samsung X360 features 3 USB ports, HDMI, VGA, and a docking port 7-in-1 card reader, PCI ExpressCard/34, Ethernet, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and a 1.3 megapixel camera and a long battery life from 6 to 10 hours.

Samsung X360 weighs in at 2.8 pounds (1.27Kg) and measures 0.66- 1.2 inches thick. X360 is not only lighter than Mac Air (3 lbs), but it is lighter than 12-in ThinkPad X200 (2.95 lbs), 13-in ThinkPad X300 (2.9 lbs) and Voodoo Envy 133 (3.37 lbs).

Regarding thinness, X360 can not compete with MacBook Air (0.16 to 0.76-inches thickness) but X360 is thinner than other rivals including Envy 133 laptop (0.70-inches), and ThinkPad X300 (0.73-inches thickness) and ThinkPad X200 (0.80-inches thickness).

The X360 will be priced at about £1200.

Engadget could have hands-on Samsung X360. According to them:

- Samsung X360 has a build somewhere in-between the plastic-ish Voodoo Envy 133 and the rock-solid ThinkPad X300

- The design is special and attractive with the brushed metal finish on the back

- Keyboard looks cheaper than the design, not as crisp as an Apple keyboard but comfortable

- The LED Backlight Display is bright but not too glossy

- There are enough ports and slots which you can not find them on MacBook Air

- The next-gen 128GB SSD offers for his laptop decrease he boot time a 25-50 percent

- Samsung X360 is thicker than MacBook Air, but 3 ounces lighter than Air (weight of 1.36Kg)

With the features that Samsung X360 sports it can easily challenge its serious rivals mentioned above, especially MacBook Air. However, about the matter of thickness MacBook Air has saved its crown, yet.

Montevina-based Dell Studio XPS 13 and 16 Slip Out; Hit the Market in November

Dell started to depict future of XPS line up for the consumers by introducing its new laptop line“Dell Studio family including Studio 15 and 17”.

Leaking out the upcoming Dell Studio XPS 13 and 16 laptops shows that Dell has started diverting from XPS line up to Studio line up.

As you know Dell Studio laptop series stands between higher-end Dell XPS laptop series and more affordable lower-end Inspiron laptop line up. It means Dell is trying to combine the high quality of XPS laptops with the affordable price of Inspiron laptops.

So, I think that Studio XPS 13 and 16 will offer these two factors to the consumers.

Dell Studio XPS 13 and 16 will come with:

-Sleek new design

- Based-on Intel’s latest Centrino 2 (Montevina) platform

- They will come with hybrid SLI graphics support

- Offering Blu-ray drives,

- Edge-to-edge glass floating displays with optional full HD and RGB LED backlighting,

- Backlit keyboards,

- WiMAX and UWB and Bluetooth capabilities

- Multimedia buttons

- Security tools like fingerprint reader

-Webcam

- E-SATA/USB port

Regarding the price, I guess these two Studio XPS laptops must offer more attractive prices than the price tags that XPS laptops offer in the market today.

The other leaked slides show that we should expect to see New Studio laptops and Studio Slim DT laptop in the market soon.

Also, Dell will upgrade Inspiron 1525, Studio 15 and 17 and XPS laptops with Intel’s Montevina or Centrino 2 platforms.

Also, Dell will offer new Art Design for its popular Studio 15 and 17 in October onwards.

Why Intel Moving to Nehalem Microarchitecture? Intel Releases Nehalem roadmap

Many of you may ask this question that what the benefit of moving to Nehalem architecture is. Or you may think that how much surplus gain or efficiency the new components used in Nehalem like Turbo mode, Intel QuickPath Interconnect etc brings advantages for the users and also Intel?

These are important questions that different websites have tried to find out the worthy answers for them. I could collect several answers from different website that you can read them in the following:

-ExtremeTechIntel think that Nehalem is the first microarchitecture that will give Intel a lot of freedom to “easily scale up and down clocks and threads, and add capabilities like graphics and other accelerators to future cores”.

Improving the performance by Turbo mode will be one of the advantages that users can get from Nehalem. Turbo mode will be used in future processors to reroute power and improve performance.

Nehalem also will give more hand to Intel to control the power leakage.” The new feature is a so-called "power gate" that was newly designed for the Nehalem architecture, that can block switching and leakage power loss”.

- AnandTech in its preview has mentioned that 10% increase in drain power by Nehalem brings about surplus 20-30% overall performance over Penryn. Moreover, a 2.66GHz Nehalem is faster than the fastest current 3.2GHz Penryns on the market.

According to their test on 4.8 GT/s version of Intel QuickPath Interconnect the copy bandwidth of using triple-channel 1066 MHz DDR3 was 12.0 GB/s while a Core 2 Quad system running at 3.0 GHz using dual-channel 1066 MHz DDR3 resulted 6.9 GB/s.

Intel QuickPath Interconnect or simply "QuickPath” is a competitor to HyperTransport and a replace for the Front Side Bus (FSB).

-Techpowerup in its entry has shown that a 2.93 GHz Nehalem Bloomfield (single-socket desktop CPU) running a 3DMark Vantage benchmark and Super Pi 1M could achieve a CPU score of 17, 966 and finish the Super Pi 1M in 15.475 seconds.

So, Nehalem is really giving a giant leap to Intel to stay ahead in the market and widens its gap with AMD in the matter of CPU performance.

According to wikipedia, Nehalem changes the architectural of x86 microarchitecture significantly and incorporates different components for different tasks.

In the following, you can acquaint with the components that Nehalem will deploy in its

specification:

- Two, four, or eight cores with clock speeds increasing

-45 nm technology

- On-die memory controller supporting DDR3 SDRAM to manage one up to six memory channels

- Integrated graphics processor (IGP) placed into the CPU package

- A new point-to-point processor interconnect, the Intel QuickPath Interconnect, replacing the front side bus (FSB)

- Simultaneous multithreading, which enables two threads per core. Simultaneous multithreading has not been present on a consumer Intel processor since 2006 with the Pentium 4 and Pentium EE.

-Native (monolithic, i.e. all processor cores on a single die) quad- and octo-core processors

The caches including:

32 KB L1 instruction and 32 KB L1 data cache per core

256 KB L2 cache per core

2-3 MB L3 cache per core shared by all cores

For instance, a Nehalem processor running at 3.2 GHz was showed at the Shanghai IDF came with a 32 KB L1 instruction and 32 KB L1 data cache, 256 KB L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of shared L3 cache.

Here is Intel's Nehalem roadmap, as officially released by Intel:

-Nehalem's first server processor and first production codenamed "Nehalem-EP"

-A second server designed for the expandable sever market codenamed "Nehalem-EX"

- Desktop "Havendale" and "Lynnfield" processors (using Core i7 desktop platform) and mobile "Auburndale" and "Clarksfield" processors (using Calpella platform) hitting the market in the second half of 2009

Asus Going Back to Celeron Processor Again!

I don’t know of anyone of this age who is a fan of Celeron processor. After Intel announced its Atom processor, many people thought that the days of Celeron processors are going to be numbered. Atom is good for low-cost laptops or Netbook Laptops. And you know that low-cost laptops are very popular these days. Almost everyday we hear the arrival of a new low-cost mini laptop.

I was shocked to see this news that Asus is going to put Celeron processors in its mini laptops again. Well, the problem is that Intel could not predict the demand for its Atom CPU and that is why there is a shortage of supply. So, Asus has to no choice but to go for alternatives.

What I am surprised is that why Asus did not go for VIA and AMD variants. If you have regularly read my entries so far, you should be familiar with comparisons and tests done on the different CPU variants for mini laptops such as VIA C7 CPU, VIA Nano CPU, Celeron M and I think according to these results Asus could have better option that Celeron M CPU. Like Everun Note, Asus could try for AMD Turion 64×2 Dual Core 1.2GHz (1MB L2 Cache) processor which has shown that can deliver the best performance compared to other CPU variants made for mini laptops (Atom, Nano, etc).

You can see check out the tests on these CPUs in the following Entries:

-Everun Note with 1.2GHz AMD Turion Dual Core CPU: The most powerful Mini Laptop Ever

-A First Benchmark: Atom CPU vs. VIA Isaiah vs. Celeron M vs. VIA C7

-2nd Test: Atom vs. Celeron M 353 vs. Core 2 Duo U7600; Wind PC vs. Eee PC 900

-VIA Nano L2100 vs. Intel Atom 230: Real Competition between Two Cheap Makers

-Test Four: VIA Nano CPU vs. Atom Processor: Nano Really Better than Atom!

What is your opinion? Do you have any suggestions for Asus? Please share them with us in the comment section.

OLPC Conquers Niue Island

Today, OLPC had a major victory over Intel’s Classmate PC. The government of Niue Island has decided that all the school children will get OLPC laptop. Of course Niue Island is a very small island and it has only 1600 people. The number of school children is only 500. It is a neighbor of New Zealand and New Zealand government takes care of its foreign policy. However, Niue is an independent country.

Its government takes all the decisions of its internal matters. So, this decision may influence New Zealand too. I think that New Zealand government and Australian government are yet to give importance to the OLPC project. It shows that Niue government has smarter ministers than its neighbor.

Acer Apire One Gets Cut Price

I think one of the most attractive and popular Netbook or low cost laptop should be Acer Aspire one along HP mini-note, MSI Wind PC and Eee PC laptops. Especially now that Acer has dropped $50 from each model, they are better deal and appeal more in the market.

The new prices and configurations incorporate:

-The basic model featuring Linux OS, Intel Atom CPU, 512MB RAM, 8GB SSD, 3-cell battery pricing at $329

- The second model featuring Windows XP OS, Intel Atom CPU, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, 3-cell battery pricing at $349

- The last model that comes with full 6-cell battery is priced at $399. It features Windows XP OS, Intel Atom CPU, 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD.

The Real Dell Inspiron mini or Dell Inspiron 910 Looks More Ugly than thought

Few days ago the full specs of Dell Inspiron 910 or Inspiron mini leaked and now we are sure that Dell Inspiron mini is not the same Dell E mini laptop . So far, these two laptops have been mixed up. Hopefully, we will see Dell Inspiron mini in the market soon but there is a long way yet to know more about Dell e-mini laptop.

One Engadget’s pal Mr. Blurrycam could have his hands on Dell Inspiron mini or Dell Inspiron 910 running Ubuntu. According to the pictures published by Engadget, you can immediately compare the real pictures with the initial pictures leaked early.

(Early picture)

In early pictures you could see a very sexy laptop with beautiful interior and exterior design but, the real pictures published today showed that Dell Inspiron 910 is not as handsome as the way was thought first. Especially, the keyboard looks ordinary.

(Real Picture)

I myself prefer the design of Aspire one much more than the design of Dell Inspiron 910. What is your opinion? Do you agree with me?

The Inspiron 910 features a 8.9in WSVGA display with 1024 x 600 pixels resolution, a 1.6GHz single core Intel Atom CPU with 533MHz FSB, up to 1GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM, 4GB, 8GB or 16GB SSD (Solid State Drive), mini card support for Bluetooth, WLAN, WWAN for option, 10/100 Ethernet, optional external USB modem, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, three USB ports, and a 3-in-1 card reader.

It weighs about 2.20 lbs and runs on either Ubuntu Linux 8.04 or Windows XP.

The price will start from $299.

Intel Convertible Classmate PC Tablet Showcased at IDF 2008; See a Video

Intel Classmate PC is not the Classmate PC 3.0! But it will be considered as the next-gen or new model of Classmate PCs by Intel. Well, it is reasonable if Intel Tablet Classmate PC is considered as the rival of Gigabyte M912V tablet because, both are low-cost and come with the similar specs.

Convertible Classmate PC will be available along Classmate PC 2.0 in the market. It will sport Atom N270 processor of 1.6 GHz LCD screen, 8.9 "touch screen display with 1,204 x 600 pixels resolution, flash memory and disk options, 2USB ports, Video out put, SD slot, Ethernet LAN, Mic and headphone jacks.

There are two interesting features mentioned by the source:

- A white button sitting next to screen to rotate the image on the screen.

- The webcam can rotate forward to capture images better.

In the following you can see a video released by Intel and get more acquainted with this upcoming mini Tablet.

At a glance, I can mention three differences between Gigabyte M912V tablet and Convertible Classmate PC. First of all Gigabyte M912V targets adult users mainly, but Intel Classmate are only focused on Students. For this reason, you can find Gigabyte M912V with different designs to attract different types of users but Classmate PC carries a design suitable for students.

Also, the important difference comes in the matter of their Touch screen displays. In fact, Gigabyte M912V as I motioned in my previous entry doesn’t have a very responsive and sensitive screen. However, it will be enough for adult users (especially the adults will use the stylus) but the matter of a Tablet device for children looks more complicated. For writing, children have to put their palm first and then write down but, this style creates problems for touch screen displays. On standard touch screen displays you have to lift your hand up and then write down which sounds very uncomfortable. In this case, Intel has solved this problem and made it totally ok for its Tablet Classmate PC. So, children can easily lay down their hands on the screen and write down as like they usually do with their notebooks.

Additionally, Classmate PC laptops are rugged and durable.

Surely, in coming days we will know more about Convertible Classmate PC. Please, keep in touch for further information.

Lenovo's IdeaPad S10 is Here

I found this news in Engadget. This is a laptop to rival against Asus Eee PCs. Well, it is the time of Olympics and China is shinning in the medal tally.

IdeaPad S10 will run on Windows XP. RAM is 512MB and 80GB hard disk. You can find detailed information at the Lenevo Website.

Asus Introduced 4 More XP-based Eee PCs

The good news is that any new XP-based Eee PC is a good news. The bad news is perhaps that these models are for Taiwan. That is perhaps why, I could not find much inforation about these Eee PCs. The only thing I can tell you for sure is that they will run on Windows XP. You can find more information about them here:

Windows 7 Has an Official Blog Now; More Details in October

Today when I read news about Microsoft 7, I again realized that Windows XP was indeed the best operating system. Vista has been in the market for more than one and a half year now, but it is yet to become popular in the extent that XP could achieve. Now, we are already talking about Windows 7. So, the good news is that there has already been a blog from Microsoft about Windows 7. So, this is the improvement from Microsoft and it is clear that Microsoft is taking Windows 7 very seriously.

Microsoft is not giving too much information about W7 at this moment. However, they have already said that they will give two venues in October onward.

Microsoft’s official blog wrote:

We have two significant events for developers and the overall ecosystem around Windows this fall. The Professional Developers Conference (PDC) on October 27 and the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) the following week both represent the first venues where we will provide in-depth technical information about Windows 7. This blog will provide context over the next 2+ months with regular posts about the behind the scenes development of the release and continue through the release of the product.

It is amazing to see that MS has been providing information in such a scale. In the past we saw opposite scenario from MS and other software companies about providing information about upcoming products.

So, what do you think about W7? Do you think that it will have a huge success like XP or it will be another Vista?

The Upcoming E4200/E4300 Provide Hardware support Latitude Instant On

The Dell’s forthcoming Latitude E4200 and E4300 are coming out in next month. These two laptops will be the first Dell’s laptops to provide hardware that supports Latitude Instant On feature. Do you know what Latitude Instant On is?

Latitude Instant On feature is a Dell’s initiative to be used on new Latitude laptops. Dell latitude laptops target variety of business users. This new feature aims to bring instant access to most everyday-used tasks such as email, Firefox browser and calendar functions and communication applications without booting up the system.

The idea is very interesting. Dell has just made a diminutive PC and has put it inside the Latitude laptops like E4200 and E4300. This package sports its own a low-power ARM processor and flash memory and runs on its own dedicated SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 Operation system. The OS bundled with some software tools like “Firefox-derived browser plus a customized email, diary and contacts organizer, as well as drivers for the notebook’s wireless and 3G HSDPA radios and Viewers for Office documents and PDF” according to the source.

This tiny PC (or secondary PC) is able to perform independently. When this package works you will not require getting the help of the main processor and hard disk and main OS functionality of your laptop. Thus, this feature will extend and prolong the battery life from few hours into days. Because for doing these task you will not need to boot up and shut down the system.

I would like to inform you three tips about Latitude Instant On:

- Users can’t access and add up their own applications to the flash memory of this package

- The first version of Latitude Instant On will be in a basic ‘reader’ mode. It means “it boots into a hard drive partition containing the OS and apps”.

- In November, Dell will roll out the full version of Latitude Instant On. It means “That full version permits no access to local hard drive – it will download data only via wireless connection to an Exchange server or a POP3/IMAP account. This is intended as a security feature in keeping with the corporate focus of the Latitude notebooks, working under the assumption that most businesses run Exchange in their back office”.

A Rumor Says: A Revision of MacBook Air with Penryn CPUs to Come out Soon

Nowadays, every laptop maker have been trying to refresh its laptop lines up and upgrade its popular laptops with Intel’s latest platform Centrino 2 and 45nm Penryn processors.

Of course Apple doesn’t want to lag behind other companies. So, Romors are coming that Apple is preparing a new version of its popular MacBook Air which is the world’s thinnest laptop.

Apple will not change the external design a lot, but it will mainly upgrade the current MacBook Air with Penryn processors. As you know Intel is releasing a few ultra-low voltage Penryn processors in September onward. So, possibly, the clock speeds ranging will be raised from the current 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz up to possibly 2.26GHz and more. The new system will be automatically upgraded with the 1,066MHz FSB, as well.

Naturally the power drain will be more than the current 20W. We can also expect to see better integrated graphics card in the new revision of MacBook Air. For this reason, Apple will have to take a more powerful 60W power adapter which will be like more to those found for MacBook laptops. Right no,w the current MacBook Air uses a 45W MagSafe adapter.

Additionaly, the upgraded MacBook Air will have more storage options for its consumers. Along the optional SSD, users will find support for options like 120 GB, and 160 GB Hard drives.

Surely soon, more rumors and information about MacBook revision will come out. So, Keep in Touch!

HP Announces EliteBook 8730wm, EliteBook 8530w and 8530p Mobile Workstations

HP is going to launch three new mobile workstations including 17-inch EliteBook 8730wm, 15.4-inch EliteBook 8530w and 15.4-inch EliteBook8530p later this month alongside Dell’s upcoming Mobile workstations (Precision M2400, M4400 and Precision M6400) and forthcoming Lenovo ThinkPad W700.

The new HP EliteBook 8730w is the only mobile workstation on the market to offer a 17-inch diagonal HP DreamColor Display, which offers over 16 million colors, a significant improvement to the 260,000 available colors on traditional notebook PCs. The notebook also offers an Intel quad-core processor, 8 GB of memory and NVIDIA’s next generation of Quadro FX cards with up to 1 GB dedicated video memory.

The HP EliteBook 8730w Mobile Workstation is expected to be available later this month at the starting U.S. list price of $1,699. The HP EliteBook 8530 series is expected to be available in September starting at $1,499.

HP Announces 16 New Laptops Based on AMD Puma and Intel Montevina

The HP EliteBook 8530w and HP EliteBook 8530p add professional graphics capabilities in a convenient mobile format, making the notebooks ideal for extreme power users in fields such as animation, video production, broadcasting, photography, design and engineering. Both systems include a 15.4-inch diagonal display, Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 8 GB of memory. Additionally, HP EliteBook 8530w supports Intel quad-core mobile processors.

While EliteBook 8530p with a starting weight of just 6.3 lb/2.86 kg is based on Intel Centrino 2 with vPro technology and sport a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics card. EliteBook 8530p will provide HDMI port, Blu-ray recorder, and eSATA port which is a fast connection to an external storage device.

It is nice to know that Dual/Quad Core is a new technology designed to improve performance of certain software products. Not all customers or software applications will necessarily benefit from use of this technology. 64-bit computing on Intel architecture requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel 64 architecture. Processors will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel 64 architecture-enabled BIOS. Performance will vary depending on hardware and software configurations.

Nvidia’s Graphics Issues Spreads: G92 and G94 Chips Affected too?

The new news items spreading in Web shows that the Graphics issue is turning into a serious trouble for Nvidia. More laptops and even desktop PCs are reported to be affected by Graphical bug. Already we have known that all G84 and G86 chips are defective with the problem.

Unfortunately, the latest news has unveiled about the G92 and G94 chips that are “going bad in the field at high rates”. It is really disappointing news as the G92 chip is used in many gaming and multimedia graphics cards such as the 8800GT, 8800GTS, 8800GS, several mobile flavors of 8800, most of the 9800 suffixes, and a few 9600 variants and the G94 chip is used only in the 9600GT. as you see, many important Nvidia’s gaming and multimedia graphics cards are affected. Thus, it is resulted that Some Desktop PCs are suffering the risk of failure.

So many consumers who have purchased the laptops featuring one of the graphics cards above (also you can see the lists of some of HP laptops and Dell laptops which are affected and Dell and HP have launched the BIOS Update for each laptop to decrease the risk of failure) have to use their warranty services if they are suffering graphics failures or download the BIOS Update, that they may prolong the life time of their graphics cards.

Unfortunately So far, not only has Nvidia tried to decline to be responsible for the issue and evaded the consumers, but also it has tried to blame the computer makers for the problem. In fact, as long as this issue exists; more consumers have to pay out and suffer loss. Of course, this loss will not harm the consumer only, but it will affect Nvidia more than everyone soon or later.

What do you think? Do you agree with me?

Will Dell’s $299 Notebook Inspiron Mini be Launched Next Week?

In my earlier news I have talked about a new online storage system developed by Asus to attract the Eee PC users. Now it seems that Dell is planning to fight back with its upcoming Inspiron mini. There is report that Dell Inspiron mini will be launched next week. This is coming at the time when laptop makers are trying their best fight against Asus.

The good thing for Dell is that the Christmas shopping season is coming soon. If really Inspiron mini comes to market next week then it will be ideal for back to school students as well.

The starting price of Dell Inspiron mini will be $300 and it will be available in several models.

Eee Storage from Asus to Motivate EEE PC Users

It is the time of small and cheap laptops and this is clearly the age of small laptops. Asus has surely emerged has the market leader with its Eee PC laptops. Eee PC laptops have a lot of benefits and perhaps the most important benefit is that it is affordable. However, you can easily understand that when something is too much cheap then, it has a lot of limitations too. One of the basic limitations of Eee PC is that it has small hard disk. So, the users will not be able to enjoy many good facilities.

Good thing is that Asus has started an internet based storage service called “Eee Storage” and the users will have “20GB of Free storage in internet”. Asus is also providing free download facilities to the Eee PC users. Almost three thousand software tools and games are there for the users.

I think that it is a smart move from Asus. The reality is that almost all the laptop makers are trying to present something affordable to compete with Eee PC. So, it is clear that Asus will not be able to dominate the market segment for a long time. Rather it will face tough competition from other laptop makers.

HP Taking Touch-Screen Technology Seriously

It seems that the age of Touchscreen technology has started already. Apple has seen impressive success about Touchscreen with its iPhone. Dell is also investing on this technology. Now, HP officials have taken touchscreen very seriously and they are going to develop a number of products based on Touchscreen technology with the next one and a half year.

While Apple is focusing on iPhone, HP is betting Touchscreen technology on laptops. Microsoft has also joined the race. The other day we wrote about the next operating system of Microsoft “Windows 7” and it will support Touchscreen technology.

It seems that the prospect of Touchscreen technology is only getting brighter.

$12 Computer vs. $100 Laptop

You know that in the end, OLPC did not remain a $100 laptop. So, I am waiting to see what will be the final price of a $12 computer. This computer has not been made yet. The idea has come from some graduate students in MIT. I hope you have not forgotten that MIT was the place from where the idea of OLPC came.

In fact, 6 students are working on it and they are working very hard to make this computer. Frankly, I think that it is impossible to bring out a computer for such a small amount of money.

What do you think?

MSI Wind PC with 6-Cell Battery

Some new MSI Wind PC laptop models are coming to the market this August. One interesting feature is that for the first time there will be Pink color for Wind PC. However, a more important aspect is that it will contain 6-cell battery option.

6-cell batteries are good for making battery life longer. Some other companies like Acer have taken the initiative to put 6-cell battery in their laptops. So, MSI has acted smartly.

However, I am not sure what will be the price of this new battery.

Most probably, it will be a bit expensive.

The drama of Lenovo X200 128GB SSD That Will not Take Place

I really wish that Lenovo officials handled the situation better regarding “Lenovo X200 128GB SSD order option”. At first Lenovo gave an option of having 128GB SSD for cheap price tag of $70 for ThinkPad X200. Naturally, many people were interested and placed their orders. Then Lenovo informed its costumers that it was a website error and Lenovo can not provide this SSD with this price. So, many people felt frustrated.

Right now, for the consumers who ordered that SSD Lenovo arranges a 64GB SSD for free instead!

OLPC with windows XP: How Is That?

You already know that Microsoft has decided to join OLPC project and windows XP is going to be a part of OLPC operating system. What is surprising is that Microsoftt has already stopped selling Windows XP for desktop users. Microsoft is trying very hard to promote Vista. So, it is interesting to see that how OLPC performs with XP.

OLPC users already have got taste of Linux OS (Sugar OS). The reaction has been mixed.

Joanna Sterm has written about OLPC with1 SSD storage running on Windows XP. She has talked about different aspects of the laptop.

Microsoft is giving $3 version of Windows XP Starter Edition and Office 2003. So, this will be a good laptop choice for the students. It seems that the speed of the laptop slows down with XP. I am not that much surprised with this news because XP needs a lot of computing power and OLPC is not exactly a very powerful laptop.

Joanna Sterm has also mentioned that Internet browsing was good with XP. Video quality was also good.

So, what do you think?

So far, I have compared VIA Nano processor and Atom Processor in the following entries:

This entry is the fourth one to show that VIA Nano is really performs somehow better than Atom processor.

In the fowling video you are seeing two mini laptops, one is Atom-based Eee PC and the other one is VIA OpenBook powered by VIA Nano CPU. Both mini laptops are running a 3D program. In this video it is totally clear that OpenBook is running the program smoothly while the Eee PC is performing it with some interruption. In another word Atom-based Ee PC is running it slower than OpenBook.

Lenovo 10-in IdeaPad S10 Only $400 & 9-in IdeaPad S9 Differ from Other Netbooks

Low-cost mini laptops are such useful computers that I think soon they will enter to each home and be seated along every desktop computer. Mini laptops only perform basic applications and can help handling typical tasks like browsing internet or checking e-mail listening to music but they are very portable and small. You can carry them everywhere in your normal backpack or messenger bag like a notebook.

In the market Mini laptop you can find many flavors from many known and unknowncompanies. One of these mini laptops that will be popped up in the US on September 28th and in China on September 5th and other parts of Asia on September 10th is 10.2-in T-IdeaPad S10 from Lenovo. Of course Idea Pad S10 has a smaller size brother as well called 8.9-in IdeaPad S9.

IdeaPad S10 seems similar to Eee PC 1000h or MSI Wind PC but it has two big differences. For instance, all of them are powered by Atom CPU, SSD or HDD storage or they feature Wi-Fi. The differences include:

IdeaPad S10 provides much bigger storage than the other ones.

IdeaPad S10 is the only mini laptop or net book that features Express card slot.

Other highlight features of IdeaPad S10 include:

- OneKey Rescue System to recover data at once when a system gives error or Virus attacks.

- Coming in three red, White and Black colors exterior and white interior and in two configurations: one configuration sports 512 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive and the other one sports 1 GB of memory and a 160 GB hard drive.

- Bluetooth

-Wi-Fi 802.11b/g (which is slower than the Wi-Fi 802.11n used in Eee PC 1000h)

- The system running on Windows XP will be available mere in the US, while the system running on Linpus Linux Lite will be available elsewhere.

- 4-in-1 card reader

IdeaPad S10 challenges the price of other mini laptops like Eee PC 1000h and Wind PC.

The full specs of of IdeaPAd S10 include:

IdeaPad S9 the smaller brother of IdeaPad S10 will be popped up later. This laptop will incorporate Atom N270, 1GB of RAM, and 8G SSD and other features mentioned above.

It will be priced at 12,900 Taiwan dollor or $419.6 USD. (The website makes me boggled as it talked about Yuan but when I checked out it in a currency converter I got a wrong answer. So, I consider it would be Taiwan dollar rather than Yuan).

OLPC at last in India?

You know that India has the population of over one billion. It is a third world country, so India should have been the first choice for OLPC laptops. Nicholas Negroponte was eager to make India a part of his project even as early as in 2001. Unfortunately, he did not receive any positive response from the Indian government. Then again he tried his best to convince the Indian officials in 2006. Again he failed. It is not that he could convince Indian decision makers in 2008, but you know that Nicholas Negroponte never gives up. He continues effort as brought success for OLPC project in India.

Now, The Digital Bridge Foundation, part of Reliance ADA Group has come forward to support him. You know that Reliance is one of the top five companies in India.

So, I am happy that Nicholas Negroponte could at last enter into India.

Acer to Release An Expensive 6-Cell Battery for Aspire One

We all love laptops but the only think that perhaps we do not enjoy about our laptops is that they have most of the time very small battery life. This is a big issue and many laptop companies are trying to solve the problem. Acer is very serious about this matter. There is report that six-cell laptop battery will soon be a part of Acer Aspire one laptop.

It will increase the battery life a lot significantly.

This is obviously very good news for all laptop users because if this becomes a success then other vendors will implement this strategy of extending battery life. The only problem is that the battery of Acer will be very expensive. Its price is hefty $119 while the laptop price is only $380.

Here I’d like to remind Acer is the third laptop maker take the extend battery for its mini laptop seriously after Asus and MSI.
