The Best Laptops of 2008 (list Round up)

The year of 2008 was year of netbook laptops- a new category in the market of laptops that targets any group of consumers; from pupils to students and any sort of adult users. Although, economic recession has affected every industry, it has raised the demand for netbooks because of their very affordable prices and small sizes brought out the variety of netbooks launched from unknown companies to leading laptop makers time to time last year.

Though, when we talk about the best laptops of market in 2008 we have to consider many factors. As you know, laptops are launched with different purposes and in different fixed categories. Best laptops are the all-purpose machines in their own categories or classes in terms of different factors including price, innovative feature set, functionality, portability, and battery life.

So, now the question is that how is a best laptop chosen among the thousands systems available in the market?

The brief answer is depended on which category a laptop belongs to, the price, innovative feature set, functionality and portability are compared and the best laptop in each category is chosen. Laptops are categorized in two ways:

- In one way laptops are categorized according to their applications as netbooks, business laptops, multimedia laptops, gaming laptops and workstation laptops particularly targeting professional animators, engineers and photographers.

- In another way, laptops are categorized according their portability and the size of their screens: thin and ultra slim laptops, ultra portable laptops, mid size laptops, mainstream laptops and desktop replacement laptops.

We have another sort of category that is not as important as the last two ones. We can classify laptops as said by their prices: cheap laptops like netbooks, budget standard laptops that their price is in the range from $600 or $700 up to $1500 or $1600 and expensive laptops that their prices start from $1700 up to above.

Every year the important known technology websites like Cnet, Laptop magazine, etc submit their lists of best laptops of 2008. Here I have collected list of 5 known websites including Cnet, Laptop Magazine, PC World, Yahoo, and Tech News world. Please before purchasing any laptop are making your mind check out these lists. Windows XP: Good bye but not Farewell

I am a very big fan of Windows XP OS and I know that there are many people who are fans of XP just like me. Unfortunately, Bill Gates did not understand this matter until now. I really cannot understand why Microsoft officials were so much eager to stop giving support to XP. XP is the best version of Windows and it has been going on for many years. I am happy that Bill Gates understood the value of the opinion of the consumers.

BBC wrote:

The cut off date for PC makers to obtain licenses for the software was 31 January 2009.

But now Microsoft has put in place a scheme that will allow the hardware firms to get hold of XP licences until 30 May 2009.

Previously Microsoft extended XP's life until 2010 - provided it was installed on netbooks and low-cost laptops.

Bilkl Gates and other Microsoft officials may say a lot of sweet words about Vista but the reality is that many people are not happy with it. If you look at the tech blog then you will find that many users express their dissatisfaction. I really could not understand that why Microsoft has to pull out XP. What is the problem if stays in the market. It is a very popular OS and is liked by many people around the globe.

ThinkPad W700ds with Dual Display/ Quad Core CPU Hands On and Video

So far, we have talked about many affordable budget laptops and notebooks, but all the laptops are not inexpensive. There are always well-off consumers out there who are ready to spend hefty money breaking ground powerhouse laptop workstations. ThinkPad W700ds is one of those sorts of laptops that Lenovo is launching it this January.

The desktop replacement ThinkPad W700ds is a professional laptop appropriate to professional users such as developers, gamers, engineers, photographers and designers. The laptop comes with everything that a professional users can think of : dual screen, quad-core Intel Core 2 processors, up to 8GB DDR3 of RAM, 960GB of SSD / HDD storage, discrete NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M GPU and even more.

Obviously the laptop is bulky (measuring 16" by 12" by 2.1" thick). It weighs about 11 pounds and starts at hefty price of $3,600.

According to computerworld, “The primary WUXGA 17-in. screen (with 1920 by 1200-pixel resolution) is brighter and more colorful than other notebook PC screens in the market (rating at 400 nits of brightness), while the secondary 10.2-in vertical screen is about 40% the size of the W700ds' primary 17-in. display. It can also be tilted up to 30 degrees like a car's rearview mirror”. The system also provides an integrated WACOM digitizer (an electronic drawing pad or also called a palm-rest digitizer), and color calibration software tool.

If you like this ThinkPad model preferring a single display you can purchase it with the starting price of around $2,500.
Unfortunately this amazing laptop doesn’t provide any HDMI port instead it comes with a DisplayPort and a DVI-D port (you can find it on 15-in MacBook Pro) that is only used for video (no audio).

Good thing is PC Magazine has reviewed this upcoming laptop with secondary display. The reviewed laptop cost $4,240.00 and featured Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor (2.53GHz), 4GB of RAM, 320GB storage 802.11nWi-Fi, DVD+/-RW DL with Blu-Ray, nVidia Quadro 3700M graphics card and weight of 9lbs.

Here I am only mentioning a rundown of the review:

( Pros):
-
An Editors' Choice in the workstation category
- Internal Pantone color calibrator.
- Palm-rest digitizer.
-Option for a cool secondary display which can be used to check e-mails, surf the Web, or multitask without interrupting the operations on the primary screen
-Quad-core processor delivered amazing results.
-Dual hard drives.
-Excellent performance scores.
-ISV certified graphics to guarantee successful running of CAD, DCC, and GIS applications on this laptop.
-
Five USB ports, a FireWire port, a webcam, and a fingerprint reader
-Excellent keyboard
-Outstanding graphics for gamers and professionals.
-WUXGA widescreen with rating of 400 nits of brightness.
-
Capable of showing 72% of the Adobe RGB color gamut while a typical laptop shows about 45% of it
- Huge storage
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M GPU
-
DVD+/-RW DL with Blu-Ray

( Cons):
-Butt ugly and bulky
- short battery life of 2 hours and 31 minutes

Bench mark results:

Windows Media Encoder 9 test: ThinkPad W700 scored 35% better than ThinkPad T400

CineBench: The laptop scored double than T400’s score

3DMark 2006 test: W700 laptop scored double than Sony AW190 and

Now, it is the turn of a practical experience. You can see this laptop in the following video. Surly you would like to see the functionality of the secondary display. So, watch it now!

Can Dell Adamo Become the Thinnest Laptop in the World?

Sometimes, I cannot understand the race for producing the thinnest laptop in the world. Well, it mainly comes from business motivation. Whoever can produce it will be able to earn a decent amount of revenue because we all want very thin and light ultraportable notebooks. Producing thin laptop and at the same time making it robust is a big challenge. Apple could become successful with its Macbook Air. It has got huge acceptance among the users. Now, Dell wants to get a pie of the market share of Apple in this regard.

I could not find any detailed information about this laptop. I even don’t know exactly when it will it the market. I wonder why Dell is still silent about it. Dell Adamo is creating some buzz from now.

Even the Slow Asus Eee PC 900 with Intel Celeron Can Run Winows 7!

Windows Vista is famous for its heavy-load to put on even a fast computer, but it seams Microsoft is going to change this awkward image of Vista with a fast easy booting and running of upcoming Windows 7.

The first try of windows 7 on a netbook was running a Windows 7 on a Atom-based Eee PC 1000H and comparing with Vista when running on the same netbook. You can read about it in the following:

-Windows 7 on Eee PC 1000H vs. Vista: “Things are easier in Windows 7”!

But, what about running a windows 7 (Build 6956) on a slower netbook like Eee PC 900 featuring Intel Celeron CPU at 900MHz?

Well, this is really amazing to know that Windows 7 gave quite a good response on this Netbook too! However, if the Aero is off the netbook can handle the Winodwa 7 without any interrupt because the CPU is slow and the graphics is not able to support the 3D quite well.

Multimedia Techblog has tried installing windows 7 on Eee 900 trough 4 GB USB thumbdrive. You can read the details of the whole process of installation in the blog. Also, there is a Video that shows the functionality of Windows 7 on this netbook.

For the last twenty five years, Apple has been helding MacWorld Expo to introduce new products to the consumers. The Expo was attended by all kinds of people ranging from harware enthusiasts to serious techies. Apple believes that it has reached a stage where it does not require to held shows to get people’s attention.

What is not clear is when Apple decided Jobs would skip the keynote. The source indicated that Apple had strung IDG along for weeks, implying that it was business-as-usual concerning Jobs' pending appearance up until the moment that it wasn't. One big question is how this will go down with the Mac faithful who have flocked to this annual event through good times and bad. To be sure, there will be official Apple events in the future, like the Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple announced that Steve Jobs gave his last keynote address at MacWorld in San Fancisco in January 2008. The news came as a big shock to International Data Group (IDG). IDG World Expo division, a subsidiary of IDG mainly handles the the Macworld event. They were informed only few weeks ago. Over the years, Steve Jobs appearance in the event has become a big event.

Solid state disk is something that many of us one that we cannot afford it because it is expensive. But there is an other side of the story too. It cannot find At the great amount of storage in a solid state disk. So, on the one hand you have to be a lot of money but on the other hand, you cannot find enough storage. So, at this moment it is a total loss for many consumers And especially those people who think of their budget a lot for them really solid state disk is not the ideal option even in laptops. Next year, Toshiba is going to change all that and is going to bring 512GB  solid state disk.

These include 64GB, 128GB and 256GB SSDs, which will be available in 1.8in drive cases and 1.8in flash modules, as well as the standard 2.5in cases.

You might think that I’m talking about something that will come after many months but the good news for you is that Toshiba is going to display the port that only after a few days in January, 2009 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

The top 10 video games of 2008

If you are a fan of video games, then you would definitely like to know the games that ruled the gamers’ world in 2008. While surfing in the net today, I came across an article where I got the top ten list of video games for the year 2008. Football Manager 2009 is leading the list, followed by Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 which progressed few placed to reach at the second place. Third-placed Call of Duty: World at War remains in the third place, but last week’s no. 2 Grand Theft Auto IV slipped two places to 4. There is no change from 5th to 9th places as World of Warcraft: Wrath of Lich King, Fallout 3, Spore, Left 4 Dead and Far Cry 2 take the places accordingly. If you want to know more about the top ten video games of 2008 then read the article at custompc website

5.6-in Fujitsu LifeBook U820 Mini Tablet Hands on

Fujitsu LifeBook U820 went on sale in USA in early November 2008. So, it is very nice to get more idea about its advantages and disadvantages. Fujitsu LifeBook U820 costs around $1000 as expensive as twice the price of a $400 or $500 10-in netbook, while it comes with a very small size 5.6-in screen (half of the size of a 10.2-in screen). So, it makes me curious to know what special features this mini tablet provides that makes it more expensive than a typical netbook. Also, what limitations it has that purchasers should be aware of them.

Notebookreview could have his hands-on this UMPC and had reviewed it in deep details. Here, I am just mentioning a rundown of the review and some of its benchmark results. you can read the whole review here.

The unit was reviewed features: Atom Processor Z530, 1GB 533 MHz SDRAM memory , 120 GB Toshiba 4200 rpm hard drive, 5.6" WXGA Crystal View display with touch screen (glossy, 1280x800), Integrated Webcam and Fingerprint Sensor,
Built-in GPS receiver and integrated Garmin Mobile PC, 10/100 Ethernet (through breakout cable), Atheros XSPAN (802.11a/b/g/draft-n) and Integrated Bluetooth wireless, weight of 1lb 8.3oz, 4-cell battery and Windows Vista Business 32-bit.

(Pros):
- A sturdy rugged-style alloy chassis covered by a plastic shell. The rotating hinges are solid
- Great readable Screen with vibrant colors and good contrast and perfect viewing angles comes with high resolution (1280X800) more than what you find on Netbooks (1280x600)
- The screen is readable indoors and outdoors
- The pointing stick is very practical for normal uses
- Built-in GPS with Garmin MobilePC software
-
The internal GPS receiver works best NOT using the included external antenna and works well even indoors.
-Over 8 hours of battery life
- Contains a VGA port and a SD-reader and CF-slot

(Cons):
-Clicking on the rough passive touch-screen is some difficult
- One USB port
-The combination of Intel Atom and GMA 500 graphics and the slow hard drive feels sluggish and slow
-Keyboard is very small
- A weak mono speaker,

Benchmark results:

wPrime test: Fujitsu LifeBook U820 scored 123.679 seconds which is a bit better than the score of HP Mini 1000 ( featuring1.6GHz Atom ) (125. 788sec), and Asus N10 laptop with 1.6GHz Atom CPU (126.047 sec) and Lenovo IdeaPad S10 (with 1.60GHz Atom CPU ( 127. 172 sec) and Acer Aspire one with 1.6GHz Atom CPU (125.812sec). However Asus 1000HA with 1.6GHz Atom CPU (117. 577) performed better than this UMPC.

PCMark05 test: all the netbooks mentioned above performed some better than this LifeBook U820 (scoring 1038 PCMarks); (except HP Mini 1000 that the result had not been mentioned in the original article).

3DMark06 test: LifeBook U820 only scored slightly better than Asus N10 laptop but other netbooks scored better results than this UMPC

Well, as you see if you are searching for an affordable small computing device with long battery life up to 8 hours, GPS-ready and different network connectivity options, Fujitsu LifeBook U820 is a good choice for you. But, remember you will have to sacrifice the affordable price, the large screen, good keyboard, and better performance of a 10-in netbook like Asus Eee PC 1000HA or popular inexpensive 8.9-in Acer Aspire One.

VIA Trinity Platform-Rival of Nvidia’s Ion, Delivers DirectX 10.1 and Blu-ray

The market of netbook is very young as it was established in late 2007 and now after one year we are going to see the new generation of Netbooks to come out with better forthcoming GPU with DirectX 10.0 (or beyond) support and CPU in 2009 to blur the lines between themselves and the standard full-featured laptops.

We have just heard about the Nividia’s diligence of making a new Ion platform for netbooks or mini laptops to utilize the much better GeForce M9400 graphics along Atom CPU. I am happy that Nvidia is not the only company that is trying for the improvement of netbooks. Although VIA is collaborating Nvidia for new platform, it has just announced its upcoming platform codenamed “VIA Trinity” to bring better 3D support and performance for mini laptops or netbooks.

“VIA Trinity platform couples a power efficient VIA processor like the VIA Nano processor with one of VIA's highly integrated unified digital media chipsets, and adds the power of an onboard S3 Graphics PCI Express discrete GPU … to provide all the Hi-Def performance and latest x86 technology support in three chips that other vendors require in four, yet uses less power, granting system and board builders an immediate head-start in the SFF market.”

“The VIA Nano processor provides scalable, power efficient performance for a truly optimized computing experience with no compromises. This is coupled with one of the VIA system media processors, all-in-one, highly integrated digital media IGP chipsets featuring the 800MHz VIA V4 front side bus.

The S3 Graphics Chrome onboard graphics accelerator supports the latest DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL graphics architectures, HDMI output and playback of the latest Hi-Def content with the Chromotion™ HD 2.0 video engine. Delivering the full add-in card graphics experience in an extremely low-power onboard package, Chrome brings hardware acceleration for all leading video standards including H.264, MPEG-4, VC-1, WMV-HD and AVS for a stunning visual experience, yet remains within the strictest of thermal envelopes.”

Dell Studio XPS 13 Laptop Photo Leaked?

I guess that sometimes laptop makers wish that there were no blogs in Internet. Yes, blogs are very good for their business as laptop news items rarely get covered in the mainstream media. It is thanks to some top blogs that they reach to the mass people in America and around the world. This is the good side but there is a bad side too. But sometimes, laptop makers try to keep their business secrets and try to keep the announcement of a model secret. Dell Studio XPS 13 is perhaps this kind of model that Dell  company wanted to keep the news out of the media.

Thanks to Engadget, this news is no more secret. So read about it here: Dell Studio XPS 13 leather-wrapped laptop revealed, Adamo info leaked!

Nvidia to Dive in the Netbook Market with Its up Coming Ion Platform

Nvidia finally made its watching and planning for the Netbooks down-to-earth and feasible. Nvidia first planned for ultra slim laptops like Mac Air and released an appropriate GeForce 9400 graphics for Apple’s Air and got good feedback from consumers. So, this time Nvidia has used the combination of this graphics card with Intel’s Atom CPU to make a new graphics platform for Netbooks.

As you know, Atom CPU has be a choice for netbooks to perform basic computing for surfing web, but there was a logical demand for more powerful graphics than the current Intel’s GMA 945 chipset.

Except Intel, no company had tried to take part in this section and bring another alternative so far. But I am happy that Nvidia has found a good solution and it seams this is a good offer for Intel. Already, Nvidia has begun its cooperation with VIA to do something similar with this CPU. Although, Intel is a leading cheap maker in the netbook market and it has far distance with its rivals like VIA, the collaboration with Nvidia will guarantee this distance and will simultaneously satisfy the consumers more and surge to the market the netbooks.

According to Nvidia, Ion graphics platform will improve the graphics and video transcoding performance by10x and will give gaming capabilities to the Atom-based netbooks.

Therefore, the new graphics will help out the netbook to handle the heavy operating system as Vista or the upcoming Windows 7 easily.

Ion will allow the netbooks to get HDMI out port instead of VGA to function high definition content on HD screens meanwhile to keep the same battery life as consumers get on their netbooks today.

Now the important question is that how much will Ion platform raise the price of netbooks? Despite the price of Ion platform is not clear but the company predict that the current prices of netbooks will increase only around u pt $50. So, it is not a big deal in the terms of price but it is a big deal in the terms of graphics 3D performance and battery life.

Well, the prospect of Netbooks or it is better I say the notebooks are becoming much more clear now, don’t you think so? This route turns out that step by step Netbooks will get closer to standard laptops in terms of features and performance while they will influence the market in terms of price too and gradually lower the price of full laptops.

Nvidia expect to launch the graphics platform in the first half of 2009. However before that, it is going to show off it at CES 2009.

Google Chrome: Out of Beta and now 1.0

The history of Google Chrome is not that old. It was a browser of 2008 but it was in beta status. Now, Google Chrome out of Beta version and you can download the full version and enjoy Internet browsing.

I am one of the millions of Internet users who installed the beta version of Chrome and I enjoyed many of the features. I have to admit that the speed was excellent and I liked the search facility in the browser. Of course, Google is the king of search engines and it is natural that Chrome makes search even easier for people. There are many other facilities and I am quoting from the report of official Google blog:

Even more speed. Google Chrome starts up fast, loads pages quickly, and just keeps getting faster. Since the first beta, the V8 JavaScript engine runs 1.4 times faster on the SunSpider benchmark and 1.5 times faster on the V8 benchmark — and there is more speed to come.

I would surely love to see that Chrome can Challenge Opera browser in terms of speed. Still now, I am a big fan of Opera only because of the fact that Opera is the indeed the fastest browser on earth.

Verizon Assures that 4G LTE Network to Come Out by the end of 2009

Verizon- the winner of FCC’s auction for the 700 MHz block of the wireless spectrum has stated recently that it will be able to launch the faster mobile broadband 4G LTE network in late 2009. OF course Verizon will first release it only in limited but large population areas like New York City. And Vodafone which is part of Verizon will spread 4G globally.

Daily Tech reported:

Required LTE chipsets are being sampled by chipset makers like Sandbridge Technologies and according to reports, Qualcomm isn’t far behind on sampling its own LTE chipset. LTE will not be a standard only in the U.S., Vodafone, which owns part of Verizon is touting the specification for use globally.

Now the important questions are coming up “what about the future of 4G? Do you think it will be as successful as 3G although its serious rival WiMAX has been debuted much earlier and it will hit the small market after one year?”

Answering these questions is not easy. However, it is not clear that howmuch WiMAX can take advantage of its early launching.

According to Daily Tech, Sprints has not turned out well for its WiMAX. The company has been unable to hold onto its customers with its Wireless Service, so far and it has created “doubt on the long-term viability of WiMAX”.

This is a good opportunity for Verizon to take best advantage and do a lot of campaign for its upcoming 4G and made the consumers ready for it, especially 3G has a good reputation in the market.

Intel to Showcase Convertible Classmate PC- the Final Unit at CES 2009

As you remember, Intel Convertible Classmate PC or tablet is a touch netbook that targets children. Intel is going to display the final unit of Classmate tablet or Netvertible or CTL 2go Tablet at CES Jan- 2009. Of course Intel will not be the only company that will demonstrate a Touch netbook, MSI, and Asus are going to put on show their prototype touch-enabled Wind PC and Eee PC netbooks, as well.

Already, I have covered the feature set, pros and cons of this netbook in my previous entry (Classmate tablet or Netvertible or CTL 2go Tablet Hands-on; First Impressions) and nothing has changed about this netbook. However, Intel has worked on some of the weak points of the netbook and the final unit comes with slightly more facilities than the unit was reviewed before.

First of all, Intel will try to offer several color options. Second, the precise 180 degree swivel webcam is steady. Third, the netbook will come with lots of software tools and learning tools preloaded in netbook for taking more advantage of the touch technology. For instance, the system will be preloaded with Vision Objects Pen Input software tool that will help you to turn the handwriting into editable text. It is also consist of a virtual keyboard.

Fourth, the accelerometer of this netbooks operates well and quickly. When turning netbook vertically, the software adjusts the screen in less than 2 second.

It is clear than Intel is going to launch this netbook soon after CES. Although it is made for children, the system looks pretty appealing for adults too. I hope after the good success that Classmate Tablet will experience (hopefully) Intel think of making another one but for adult.

Netbooks vs iPhone: Who Will Win in 2009?

Nowadays, we hear a lot about netbooks. I feel that 2008 was the year of netbooks Just as the 2007 was the year of iPhone. Last year, Appel stole the headline of media with its hot iPhone. Many people in America and Europe were busy to buy an iPhone. It seems that the popularity of this mobile phones that has not decreased at all in 2008. In fact, I could find a report that in 2008, iPhone was almost as popular as netbooks during summer. Netbooks sold more but they came from different companies

Electronista wrote:

In spite of their higher prices, netbooks are currently outselling Apple's iPhone lineup by a significant margin, according to a comparison from jkOnTheRun. The report expands on both new DisplaySearch netbook figures and elaborates on recent Gartner smartphone figures to reveal that the combined netbook market shipped about 5.7 million computers versus an estimate 4.7 million iPhones that ultimately reached users' hands in the same period. Apple is believed to have kept just over 2 million iPhones for inventory.

Well, Steve jobs will not be happy with news. He is not fan of netbooks. Well, I am a bit surprised to see why there is any comparision between iPhone and netbooks. iPhone is not a laptop while netbooks are not mobile phones.

I am waiting eagerly for 2009. Who will win?

Many netbook users like the owners of Acer Aspire One, Dell Mini9 or Wind PC who love to install the Appl’es OS X on their non-apple Laptop, have been able to run it on their netbooks so far. This is illegal, but there are some people who are fan of Apple’s OS. They could run OS X with the OSx86 project, but this one is not 100% compatible with the Netbooks. Especially, the users who have this OS installed on their netbooks, have not been able to use their WLAN, for the lack of this driver.

This is now good news that Realtek employees have started to email the Wi-Fi driver (RTL8187SE driver) using for Wind U100 to those who have contacted the company.

Gottabemobile reported:

Apparently, the driver was emailed directly from a Realtek employee to someone that inquired about its availability. Regardless of how the RTL8187SE driver came to be, users are reporting success with the Realtek WLAN Client Utility. The RTL8187SE doesn’t show up as an airport card, but does provide full Wi-Fi functionality for OS X Wind users.

The Realtek employees mentioned in their emails that this driver would be released before December 15th. However, Today is now December 15 and it is not out officially yet. So, it is a good opportunity if you like to experiment a wind U100 fully compatible with Apple’s OS X.

For sever times, Apple has clearly mentioned that they don’t like to enter other netbooks market like other laptop makers. As there are many OS X enthusiasts, I hope Apple release OS X compatible with netbooks and save netbook users from violating the law.

45 Things I Like and Dislike about MacBook Air (Reviews Round up)

MacBook Air is an ultra portable laptop that brought a new style of slimness and modern design for stylish expensive ultra portable laptops. First MacBook Air was released in January 2007. It created a lot of Buzz in Web and it was criticized by many laptop experts. This year Apple announced the new revamped Mac Air or the new version in October 14th 2008. The main changes have come about the laptop’s guts like processor, memory, hard drive, graphics card and ports.

About the updated Mac Air, you will find many reviews in Web that it will take a lot of time to read all of them. Here I have tried to collect 45 notes (22 the good sides and 23 bad sides) of new Mac Air that different reviews have mentioned here in one entry to help you to get more real idea about Mac Air.

MacBook Air is available in two models: The base model with the price of $1800 and the top model with the price of $2500.

I have collected the following information from Engadget (Air review), Engadget (Air Rev. B mini- review), PC world, Computer world, and Macworld.

I like MacBook Air Because of

1- Stylish modern sleek sturdy unibody design

2- It's the thinnest laptop ever.

3- The top model with 128GB SSD is cheaper than the Air laptop went on sale with 64GB SSD in January.

4- Faster Intel Core 2 Duo processor used in top model with 6MB of Level 2 cache and 1,066-MHzFSB (60 MHz faster than the 1.8-GHz processor used in the previous iteration)

5- Faster DDR3 RAM (still just 2GB à dislike)

6- The bigger storage: the base model comes with 120GB hard drive and the top model sports faster 128GB SSD. Both storages are 50% bigger the storages used in the first-gen Air laptops.

7- Falling SSD prices help more users to purchase Air laptop with SSD storage and get the benefit of faster booting up, and faster launching program (compared to 4,200-rpm hard drive used in first-gen Air).

8- The overall performance of the new version is 4 times faster than the previous iteration

9- The bright glossy vibrant LED screen with 1280-by-800-pixel resolution is big enough to read on

10- The new NVIDIA graphics Nvidia 9400M graphics is a single chip that has been designed for laptops and smaller computing devices and it performs up to five times faster graphics performance than Intel's Centrino 2 chip (or four times the 3-D gaming performance of the last model with integrated graphics).

11- Full-size keyboard on a slim small laptop

12- Keyboard is solid and sturdy and the keys are tactile. So you can easily have a long touch-typing on Mac Air

13- The keys are backlit

14- It is a cool laptop and you can easily put it on the lap and use it for long time

15- Integrated 802.11n wireless works well

16- The Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR as a standard option is also nice

17- Power adapter is small and light enough for carrying

18- The multi-touch trackpad is practical and easy to learn and use

19 - Built-in iSight is a nice feature

20- Apple has released an update to fix several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Air (Late 2008) computers.

21- The new Air with 12GB SSD takes only 28 seconds to boot up from Mac chime to desktop.

22- The new Air with 128GB SSD launches applications very fast. For instance, it launched Adobe Photoshop Elements in 8 seconds.

I dislike Mac Air because of:

1- The external optical drive comes with some wired power requirements. Also, you have to buy the optical drive separately.

2- Lack of many of the features that are necessary or even sometimes vital for corporate users

3- The new version doesn’t come with new power-efficient and lower-heat 45nm Penryn chip.

4- The display comes only with glossy finish and there is no Matte option

5- With this glossy display you can not work outside or near a window

6- It comes only with a tinny mono speaker

7- Lack of 3G connectivity for option

8- Lack of an ExpressCard slot

9- Having only one USB port

10-no FireWire,

11-no Ethernet,

12- The Sturdy foldable door doesn’t open while sitting on the table

13- The battery is integrated; Lack of replaceable battery is annoying

14- The integrated battery and its short life time keeps you tight to the outlet and make the Light Air some unusable for the road warriors.

15- The average battery runtime with mild use is about three hours which is yet far from the 5 hours battery life that Apple has promised (with Apple estimating the Air will last thoroughly 4.5 hours when the screen brightness turned down by half and Wi-Fi on and it will last only between 2 and 2.5 hours runtime when playing videos or watching a movie).

16- “The Air's MagSafe implementation won't always work with your current MagSafe adapters simply because the angle and location make it physically impossible to accommodate when used on a table”.

17-The USB port won't often adapt the 3G modems and some flash drives without a USB extension cable

18- Even, headphone port doesn’t sometimes adjust easily and you have to find a matched audio extension cable that will increase your expense naturally.

19- Non-standard mini-DisplayPort rather than the equally obscure micro-DVI

20- With this new display port, you’ll need an adapter if you're planning to use the laptop with anything but Apple's new 24" LED monitor.

21- With some strain on Air, the system goes some slow-down

22- Playing 3D games is some a far matter

23- A lot of complaint against several issues about the stability of MacBook Air

The MacBook’s Memory Issue Settles Even with Firmware Update

If you remember, I mentioned in my earlier entry that Apple had released bunch of firmware updates for its MacBook, Macbook Pro and MacBook Air ( late 2008) laptops. Unfortunately, the released patch for MacBook laptop doesn’t solve the memory issue. The problem is apparently, MacBook doesn’t run the 4GB of RAM. With 4GB of RAM the laptop hangs, instead it is fine when there is only 2GB or 3GB of RAM installed.

It turns out that Apple has to work more for the issues occurred on Macbook laptops. Do you own any new MacBook laptop? If you have downloaded then new patch on your laptop, was the firmware useful for you or you are suffering from some issues yet? Please share your experiences with us in the comment section.

MSI to Expose Wind U110, U115, U120 & Affordable 13.3-in U300 at CES 09

We are getting closer to Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which will take place Next month in USA. So, the laptop companies which will take part in this show would like to give enough information to the show visitors to make them or enthusiast to call on their rooms in the show. MSI- one of the standout companies in the netbook market that is famous with its popular 10-in Wind U100, has given us plenty information about upcoming Wind models that is going to showcase at CES 2009.

MSI is coming with full hand to this show. It is going to stimulate hopefully its fans with its upcoming Wind U110, U115, and U120 Netbooks. Also, it is introducing a new affordable13.3-in ultraportable Wind U300 laptop that will shock general public according to MSI’s Director of U.S. Sales Andy Tung. MSI will also show off a touch 10-inch Wind netbook and a 16-inch touch notebook at CES 2009.

One of the important things that Tung has mentioned in its interview is “Upgrading the RAM from 1GB to 2GB will not void the warranty.”

According to Tung, along continuing the sale of Wind U100, MSI will release Wind U120 in the USA at the end of January. Wind U120 is a revamped version of U100 targeting mature users rather than teenagers that will come with a new design, dedicated right and left mouse buttons, longer 6-cell battery, Wireless b/g/n and options support for Intel WiMAX Technology, 3.5G (HSDPA) Solution, and Bluetooth. In the terms of price, the U120 without the network options will remain in the similar rage of price that U100 comes with.

Wind U110 and U115 that will hit the market at the end of January 2009 will be the new version of MSI Wind PCs. They will come with a new Menlow-based Z530 Atom processor, and 1GB of RAM. They will offer option support for SSD or a hard drive(16, 32, 64 GB SSD, 160GB or 250GB HDD). One of the striking features of these two netbook is that by making off the hard drive you will be able to save a lot of battery life. You will be able to get 10 hours of battery from U115 and 8 hours of battery runtime from U110 this way from mere 6-cell battery. This is really nice because of the biggest problem that Netbooks or mini laptops come in for is the short battery. Well, although disabling hard drive will increase the battery runtime, you will just be able to surf the Web this way.

These two netbooks will keep the same size of U100 and will resemble U100, as well. Each laptop will feature 10-inch LED backlight display, 802.11 b/g/n, 1.3 MP or 2MP webcam. The prices of these two netbooks is not clear. Surely, their prices will not be over than $699.

The Wind U300 is a 13.3-inch ultra portable laptop that will be ultra slim and light. However, unlike Mac Air and ThinkPad X300, it will be inexpensive and affordable laptop. It will be covered by the aluminum design. Tung thinks that U300 will shock everybody! The laptop will deliver give 6 to 7 hours of battery life.

The plan that MSI has for this CES show, turns out that MSI is trying to have a good jump in the overwhelm market of netbooks to capture more shares, Before MSI, Asus has been doing a lot and has released variety of Eee laptops for different needs to maintain its top position but, in the end, Acer could overtake it in Q4 2008 with its only Netbook, Aspire one. Well, I think now you are asking that why has it happened? Why has Asus lost its top position to Acer with plenty of Eee laptops in the market? Well, I think the answer can be abridged in few words: chic design, very good price, comfortable keyboard while coming with 9” display. In many reviews you can find some complains against its price, shorter battery and Eee’s weight, while Acer could bring better offers for its Aspire one. Good thing is that MSI has acted similarly like Acer. From the beginning, they focused on 10-in display with bigger keyboard while they tried not selling their Wind PC as expensive as the released price of Eee 1000.

So, we would keep watching the market if the new Wind will achieve the same success that Wind U100 could get.

HP Mini 1000 at just $359.99?

I have mixed feeling about it. First of all, I am very happy that I am not dreaming. The price is real according to Laptoping.com. So, there is a lot of reasons to celebrate this price. Most consumers will feel very excited with the bargain price. I am unhappy because this is not applicable in my country. So, the only thing I can do is just to write about it. To know more, visit this link:

HP Mini 1000 to Get $40 Price Drop

It seems that HP is not the only company that is slashing price of Netbook so much. Lenovo IdeaPad S10 10-inch LED Atom Netbook is getting a good price cut and will be sold at $349. To know more, go here:

$50 off Lenovo IdeaPad S10 10-inch LED Atom Netbook (White) $349

It is amazing to see such great deals. It clearly indicates that we will see an intense price war among laptop makers over netbooks in 2009.

Boston-Power and HP to Give Next-Generation Laptop Battery

I have been giving a lot of thought for buying an inexpensive laptop but then I feel discouraged when I see that battery life does not support my goal of buying an inexpensive laptop. I am also worried about warranty of the batteries too. Well, that is why I felt happy to see the news that Boston-Power and HP have joined hands to give powerful batteries to the consumers. I am giving an extract from the press release:

In addition to setting a new benchmark in notebook PC battery technology, HP Enviro Series program notebook batteries with Sonata technology will come with a three-year warranty – the longest battery warranty available from any notebook PC provider.

“Consumers depend on their notebook computers as much as they do because they enable mobility – whether being used for leisure or work activities,” said Boston-Power Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud. “To truly empower users with that type of flexibility, batteries have to last longer and provide more dependable performance. Sonata delivers these benefits while staying true to Boston-Power’s commitment to environmentally sustainable products. We’re thrilled to be teaming with HP to bring Sonata to market.”

I am also happy to see that this battery from Boston-Power is going to be environmentally friendly. With the rapid increase of laptop computers number in the world, environmental concern is going to be something to think of seriously for any laptop maker.

Intel Sets the release-date of 32-nm Chip for PCs and Laptops in Q4 2009

Intel announced yesterday that It had completed the development phase of the manufacturing process of its next-generation32 nanometers (a billionth of a meter) chip for laptops and computers and it was going to release it in late 2009 (Q4).

The new denser 32chip will surely be cheaper to manufacture and thus cheaper to purchase in the market. The 32nm- chip incorporates second-generation high-k + metal gate technology, so its transistors switch 22% faster than the current transistors used in 45-nm chip. Therefore, the new chip will deliver faster performance as well as less power consumption than the current 45-nm chips.

The press release states:

The company is on track for production readiness of this future generation using even more energy-efficient, denser and higher performing transistors in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The Intel 32nm paper and presentation describe a logic technology that incorporates second-generation high-k + metal gate technology, 193nm immersion lithography for critical patterning layers and enhanced transistor strain techniques. These features enhance the performance and energy efficiency of Intel processors. Intel’s manufacturing process has the highest transistor performance and the highest transistor density of any reported 32nm technology in the industry.

Intel is providing a multitude of technical details around the 32nm process technology at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) next week in San Francisco.

Also, Other Intel IEDM papers will describe a low power system on chip version of Intel’s 45nm process, transistors based on compound semiconductors, substrate engineering to improve performance of 45nm transistors, integrating chemical mechanical polish for the 45nm node and beyond; and, integrating an array of silicon photonics modulators. Intel will also participate in a short course on 22nm CMOS Technology.

It is nice to remind that in earlier report Intel revealed that In second half of 2010, the next-generation (32-nm chip) of Atom CPU codenamed “Medfield” would be released.

Nividia Joining Hands with Intel to Enrich the Nettop’s Graphics; Then Netbooks?

If you remember few days ago, Nvidia emphasized on watching the netbook market but not entering in it. Well, yet this report is right but, I think Nvidia has started to check out the possibility of success in the smaller market of Atom-based nettops before entering to the bigger market of Netbook laptops.

According to the latest report, Nvidia with the cooperation of Intel is developing Nvidia's MCP79 chipset to support Atom-based nettops to enhance their graphics performance from the least level to more practical level.

So far, all the Atom-based nettops and netbooks have used Intel integrated graphics which is only enough for the least requirements. As Netbooks like mobile phones are becoming essential everyday mobile device for people, a more developed graphics can develop the functionality of these devices more.

Apparently, first, the Nvidia’s chipset will be examined on nettops. Surely, after getting the appropriate reponse, Nividia and Intel will target Netbooks.

Acer Overtakes Asus Easily with its Aspire one in Netbook Sales

Asus the creator of the market of low-cost laptops had kept on confident and excited as being the top netbook seller since the initiation of netbook market until Q2 2008. But, Acer has ended this happiness easily in Q3 2008 by its Aspire one mini-note. According to the latest survey done by DisplaySearch, netbook market grew more than 160 percent in Q3 2008, and first Acer and then Asus captured the most shares of the market. The striking point is although Asus has launched various Eee PC models with different display and feature set since late 2007, Acer was able to capture about 38% of the market by its Aspire One which was launched and stayed much far beyond Asus in Q3 2008.

Well, it shows that Asus didn’t pay attention to the weak points of Eee PC netbooks like their some uncomfortable keyboards and just repeated the same style in the new Eee PC laptops. I think, Asus has made the consumers confused by releasing many similar Eee PC laptops. It has made difficult the distinguishing of differences of these Eee PCs. Instead of releasing a number of similar netbooks, If Asus had released only few Eee PC laptops with significant different feature set and had made each one as particular netbook for particular application; it would be able to keep its leadership easier.

After Asus, HP stays much far behind with holding only 5.8% share of the market wit hits HP 2133 mini-note and recently-launched Mini 1000. It is interesting that most of top-tier laptop manufacturers (except HP) have released their mini laptops or netbooks very late this year and the have captured insignificant share of netbook sales in the market.

Intel Reveals: 32-nm Medfield; the Successor of Atom Coming in 2010

Atom processor has been one of the most standout processors in the market, So far. Most of netbooks utilize this processor and it has helped to netbooks to flourish in the market easier. So, it is very exciting to know about the successor of Atom processor and its release date. Happily, Intel has released some information about it and I am sharing it with you here.

The current Diamondville-based Atom CPU uses 454nm technology and comes along an on-die graphics (an integrated graphics into the chipset). Intel is going to release a 45-nm 'Pineview' in 2009 which will displace or take the place of the current Atom.

Pineview will be a "System-on-a-chip" meaning brining all the functions of a PC like memory controller, I/O, and graphics chip into the CPU package. Pineview will be available in two variants: a package with a dual-core CPU and a package coming with a single-core CPU.

In second half of 2010, Intel is going to release the next-generation of Atom CPU codenamed “Medfield”. Like Pineview, Medfield will use the same method of "System-on-a-chip", but it will be built from the 32-nm technology.

Mefield will be available in two versions: one will utilize a low level graphics for handheld gadgets and the other one will incorporate a higher level graphics- most probably the current GPU, for Netbooks. There is no information about the new CPUs using in these two packages, yet.

Fortunately, from the very beginning Intel dived in the market of netbooks and is still flourishing and outrunning other cheap makers. So, naturally, this ingenuity has kept Intel much beyond than other cheap makers for many years.

Google Developing an Operating System?

Sometimes, I feel that Google is on the right course for becoming a 800 pound gorilla in the technology world. Its market share of online search is only increasing month by month. Adword is a very way of getting dollars from advertisers from around the world and Google is earning a lot through it. Gmail is also becoming more popular with each passing day. So, the only thing that the company still does not have is an Operating System (OS). It seems that now, there is a distinct possibility that the company is developing an OS very secretly.

There is some rumor that Google is intentionally blocking data about the Internet activities of its employees. This is very ironic because it is good about finding information of other people. So, the rumor is that may be some employees are very busy with the development of an OS. If the rumor is true then we can think of 3 possibilities:

a. Google may develop a Linux based OS.

b. It may develop one of the existing distributions of Linux

c. It may develop something like Microsoft Windows or Apple OS (non-open source) but distribute at free of cost or even charge a small amount of money.

So, what do you think will happen in the end?

HP Mini 1000 VT (Vivienne Tam) With 3G Option Available Now

If you are fan of having a fashionable stylish netbook, HP Mini 1000 VT can be a good option for you. HP has just launched with its vibrant peony blooms design in a rosy background for stylish consumers.

The mini laptop comes with the base price of $700. Well, this laptop is not as affordable as Acer Aspire one or Wind PC but it is much more stylish and it has some more to offer of course. For instance, this netbook is among the new mini laptops that offer the 3G connectivity for option. Or the battery is safe Lithium Polymer rather than typical Lithium-ion. Or its almost full size keyboard and its 10.2" display are convenient for typing and reading and scrolling web pages.

Despite the good feature set, this mini laptop has its defect one of its disadvantages is that it doesn’t provide any Slot and any video ports like VGA port unlike other netbooks.

The recommended configuration is priced at $750 and I have mentioned its feature set in the following:

Price: $750
Processor: Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.60GHz)
Memory: FREE Upgrade to 1GB DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)!!
Hard drive: 60GB 4200RPM PATA Hard Drive
display: 10.2" diagonal WSVGA HP LED edge-to-edge Brightview Infinity Display (1024 x 600)
Graphics card: Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Network: Wireless-G Card with Bluetooth
Ports: 2USB ports;

Battery: 3 Cell Lithium Polymer Batt
OS: Windows XP with SP3
Others: HP Color Matching Keyboard (Vivienne Tam) (92% of standard size); HP Mini Webcam with HP Imprint Finish
Weight: 2.45 lbs (less than 1" thick)

Of course if you would like to have the 3G option on this laptop you have to configure it with HP un2400 broadband apparently for extra $199.

Nvidia Watches the NetBook Market, No Jump in Yet

Nvidia has again mentioned its main plan about Netbooks or mini laptops. Although, this market is expanding quickly and has been a good place for chipmakers to earn profit through the economic recession, it doesn’t mean it can be a good field for graphics card companies to involve with. Mini-laptops needed a low consumption CPU that Intel and some other chip makers filled this hole, but they don’t need a discrete or professional graphics card. The job of netbooks is doing light computing and surfing web. For this application, no computer needs a particular graphics card, The Intel’s integrated graphics card has responded well, so far.

Despite these reasons, Nvidia has restated again that it was watching the market of netbook laptops. Thus, if they see a hole in it or if they feel that releasing another integrated graphics card with better performance than the current one will be profitable surely, they will try their best to respond to this need; Like the “Tegra system-on-chip for smartphones”.

Yahoo reported:

The company's most likely move in the netbook arena would be to provide integrated chipsets with better graphics than most netbooks offer now. The graphics giant already provides integrated chipsets for laptops and next year will ship the Tegra system-on-chip for smartphones. Tegra puts an Arm processor core, a GeForce graphics core and other components, including a high-definition video decoder, onto a single chip.

Nvidia is waiting that the market of Netbooks becomes more matured. Interesting thing is that AMD one of the leading chip makers and Apple Inc. have the same idea about this market. The economic recession has pushed Apple to start trying to make a $600 Netbook. So, It is not impossible soon we hear news that Nvidia is going to make a new integrated chip for Netbooks something similar Tegra that it is already doing for smartphones.

HP Mini 1000 Available with Embedded AT&T and Verizon WWAN

Much longer after Dell announced the availability of 3G (HSPA) connectivity option for Inspiron Mini 9 XP version, HP has announced the availability of mobile broadband for its new Mini 1000 netbook, at last.

Although, one of savvy HP users could show how to activate the 3G modem hidden in the first Mini 1000, HP has done it for you now and you can buy HP un2400 mobile broadband module for $199 or configure your order with embedded WWAN for the same extra $199.

-There are some things you should know. First of all the HP Mini 1000 with 3G connectivity is not compatible with SSD storage, I am afraid. Reason is not clear yet. So, you have to accept the storage of 60GB PATA HDD (4200 rpm) and the additional price of $25 it adds to base price of Netbook.

-The 3G modem is equipped with either Verizon or AT&T mobile broadband and supports GSM and CDMA.

- The Dell’s offer for Mini 9 is much cheaper than the HP’s. By only paying $125 extra you can have this option on a Mini 9 and if you employ the new 2 year AT&T service plan you will even get back $120.

ASUS Eee PC 1002HA: Good Laptop but Bad Battery?

Laptop Magazine has carried out a detailed review of ASUS Eee PC 1002HA. The reviewer is happy with the overall performance of the laptop but thinks, “its battery life could be better.” The price is $499 and the laptop has 2 cell battery. The keyboard seems to be good and that is good thing because many users at first may feel uncomfortable with laptops. The reviewer also praised the sound quality of the microphone but was not too much impressed with the display and the webcam.

At the end of the day, battery capacity is very important for most users of today. The problem is that ASUS Eee PC 1002HA does not have any option to upgrade to additional battery life. I think that this is a big problem. Still, I am not unhappy with 3 and half hours of batter life.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Coming in April 2009

Sometimes, I wonder why Microsoft is so keen to provide service packs after release of an operating system. Well, after an operating system is released then many users find many problems and Microsoft has to come up with service packs to address the problems and bugs. The good thing is that service packs are free and users can easily download them. But if you are using Windows Vista then you should be happy to know that service pack two is coming in April, 2009.

What is interesting to me is the matter that the news came first at a Malaysian website. According to the website: in Windows Vista SP2, you will find that Microsoft has improved the facility of search. It shows that Microsoft is taping Internet even more seriously and in fact, there will be added features regarding wireless Internet and wireless data transfer.

I just hope that Microsoft is time to act more smartly and makes sure that the service pack two were reached the maximum number of users very rapidly.

HP Compaq CQ50-139QM Laptop with HP Printer, Case and 8GB USB $498.00

I really feel that this is the deal to watch in Cyber Monday 2008. The price of $498.00 for a laptop is great and when you get printer, case and 8GB USB drive too within the price then you may want to dance in happiness.

The laptop comes with Intel Celeron Processor 575 and 2 GB RAM. If you want then you can expand the RAM upto 3 GB. 15.4" display and 160 GB hard drive make it as a good laptop for many users. Windows Vista Home Basic edition is there in the laptop.

For More Information visit Walmart.

Cyber Monday Deals: Intel Based Sony VAIO VGN-NS140E/W Laptop at Best Buy for $649.99

Yesterday, I was looking at the cheaper deals on laptops for Cyber Monday 2008. Well, $649.99 is not a lot of money for a Sony Vaio laptop and Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 is preloaded with this laptop. Then, most laptops these days come preloaded with some version of Vista.

Intel Core2 Duo mobile processor T5800 looks very powerful and exciting to me. 3GB of RAM is perfect to give good speed to the performance of the powerful processor. If you are not satisfied with 3GB of RAM then you don’t need to feel bad. You can expand it upto 4GB. I wish my PC had that.

There is 4 USB ports and built in webcam. Two things I always look at a laptop carefully are display and hard drive. Sony VAIO VGN-NS140E/W has 15.4" WXGA LCD display and 250GB hard drive. If you are thinking of using internet then Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN network (802.11a/b/g/n) facility should attract you. 6.4 lbs. and 1.5" thinness help to keep the laptop portable.

So, if you are looking to buy a laptop this Cyber Monday then I would recommend you to think of Sony VAIO VGN-NS140E/W Laptop at Bestbuy.com.
