We all know that when Apple launched its iPhone in June 2007, it made an exclusive deal with the mobile phone career AT&T. As a result, only AT&T users could buy iPhone and in the US market, another major player Verizon was left out. Anyway, at that time, many people were surprised and Verizon officials were confused. Now, there is some speculation that Apple may finish the exclusive deal with AT&T and allow Verizon to sell iPhones. If really Steve Jobs goes for it then it will have some interesting implications in the mobile phone market of USA for all the 3 companies.
Now, Apple gets a good amount of money from AT&T for each iPhone sold because of this exclusive deal. Naturally, the figure will decrease a lot but Apple officials are hoping that the decrease in price per user will be handsomely compensated with the increase of total number of users when iPhones will be sold by the two operators. This will increase iPhone’s market share as well as the total income of Apple.
Well, I have to say that there is no official confirmation from any of the 3 companies about the whole matter. It is still some media speculation but most probably it will take place in 2010.
