Black Friday 2009: Online vs. Offline retailers

Rise in online sales put major retailers in worries. Target Corp., J.C.Penney co., Best Buy are now trying hard to maintain the flow of customers throughout the holiday season by giving out special offers. Though the U.S economy is showing signs of recovery, the jobloss claims is in the double digits and even many affluent families are now spending money cautiously looking for special offers. The Wall Street Journal reports:

Amazon.com Inc. joined the fray with a "Black Friday Deals Week" which began Monday with a host of limited-time deals. Executives at the largest online retailer by revenue also promised to scour competitors' Black Friday store specials and meet or beat their prices.

"You can get great Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day and on Black Friday on Amazon," said Paul Ryder, Amazon's vice president of consumer electronics, adding, "When it is three in the morning and you are thinking about getting up" to join a Black Friday queue at a store, Amazon hopes users go online.

Through their official websites, retailers are offering various Black Friday deals and many of them continues all the way to the end of the holiday season. According to Paul Leiwand, Vice President, Booz & Co., such extension makes perfect sense because there are will lots of shopping for gifts that are coming in the later part of the season.
