Core 2 ULV vs Core 2 Duo: A major source of confusion in Black Friday 2009

In this Black Friday retailers are offering many doorbusters on netbooks and laptops but not all of them are really so great deal. Laptops that costs less actually packs low powered machineries. You will find that many retailers are offering 15 inch laptops from $300 or less. These laptops are equipped with single-core CPU. If you planned to buy a laptop with Celeron processor make sure you check out for Celeron sticker on the display model.

Another major source of confusion is the CULV processor. There are Intel Core 2 CULV processors and Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The former is used in ultra-portable laptops and provides better performance than netbooks and extends the battery life but it is not so powerful. On the contrary, the Intel Core 2 Duo processors are faster.

It becomes more problematic now because many large bodied laptops are coming with ULV processors such as the new Asus UL50AG. The device has a 15 inch screen but its ULV processor is not so faster than that of Asus UL30A, the slimmer and ultra-portable model of Asus. On the other hand, there is Toshiba A505-S6980, which has a faster processor but weighs more and also thicker.

How do you know you are getting an ULV processor or just regular processor? You should check out the specs first. If it is a 1.3GHz speed processor then it is a ULV. If you want to buy a laptop with ULV processor then you should buy 13inch or smaller laptops. If you want to buy larger ones then go for non-ULV processors.
