The rumor mill of Google branded smartphone is strong once again. Google, on its official blog, said that its employees are now experimenting with a new Android handset. On December 12, 2009, news of the spread all over the Internet and now, there is a picture of the phone on Twitter. Cory O’Brien, who posted the picture on Twitter, said that the phone will be released by HTC and it will be named HTC Passion. It is the same size as the Apple iPhone, except the display is about five millimeters long. The Wall Street Journal and PC Mag.com said that the phone will be named Nexus One and it will be an unlocked phone that will be directly sold to the consumers.
Now, the big question is- Will the Google smart phone will become successful or not?
Sascha Segan wrote a nice article on PC Mag.com about this matter. First, if Google release such a phone, it will come with a high price tag. The original price of Apple iPhone is $600. Since it is subsidized by AT&T, people can get it for $199. Previously, there were unlocked phones like the Nokia N95 and E71 but nobody bought them. American people are used to buying network subsidized smartphones.
Second, American government offers two different radio frequency for three different bands. If a smartphone supports T-Mobile and AT&T, it would not be able to run on Sprint and Verizon because their network controlling system will not approve any unlocked phones. No chipset has been developed till date that will support three different bands.
Third, why getting into trouble with carriers when Google is trying hard to increase the number of Android supporter devices.
