MSI Wind U120 under Test: Better Design, Better Price, Less Battery life

10-in MSI Wind U120 is a revamped version of Wind U100 was listed in Europe few days ago and has been available for purchase in the US at Amazon and J&R for $450. Now, a review of this laptop can give a good image of it and make the decision easier for the consumers who have not decided to purchase one of either 10-inch Samsung NC10 or 10.1-in HP Mini 2140 or 10-in Wind U120. This Wind U120 is in some cases some better than the other ones and in some cases the other two ones are better. For example, It has the same size and weight of Samsung NC10, despite Wind‘s small touchpad is yet bigger than the one found on Samsung NC10. However, Wind’s touchpad doesn’t support multitouch gestures like Samsung NC10’s, or it has slower transferring rate than Nc10. or HP Mini 2140’s keyboard is slightly more comfortable that Wind U120’s famous keyboard for typist. Or the battery life of U120 is much shorter than the battery life on NC10 and Mini 2140 that lasts up to 6 hours each (according to laptop magazine).

Folk in Laptop Magazine had their hands-on Wind U120 with the price tag of $379 and reviewed this netbook in full details. They have also run some test and recorded the benchmark results. Here I am just mentioning a rundown of this review with benchmark results. But I recommend you to read the full review if you want to know about the details.

Wind U120 Feature set:

CPU: 1.6-GHz Intel Atom N270

Memory: 1GB of RAM/ max 1GB

Hard Drive: 160GB SATA (5,400 rpm)

Display: 10 inches matte LED backlight screen with 1024 x 600 resolution

Ports/slot: three USB ports and VGA, Ethernet, headphone, and microphone jacks, 4-in-1 card reader

Network: 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0,

Weight: 2.8 pounds

Battery: 6-cell battery lasting 4 hours and half

OS: MS Windows XP Home

(Pros):

-Sleeker and more business design

-Comfortable keyboard

- Matte screen with bright and good viewing angle without noticeable glare

- Loud speakers (but lacking bass)

- EasyFace Manager Software enables facial recognition (log in with face instead of using password)

-Good wireless performance (better and higher than the netbook average)

-competitive bargain price

- Mobile broadband and WiMAX connectivity options coming later

(Cons):

-Stiff mouse buttons and small touchpad

-Mediocre battery life

-Limited tech support hours

-Not upgrade friendly (RAM is not upgraded to 2GB and there is no way to access the laptop’s guts)

- It gets warm

Benchmark results:

-Boot up time: 50 sec (7 sec faster than the category average)

-LAPTOP Transfer Test: 5 minutes and 6 seconds with a rate of 16.6 MBps for transferring 4.97GB of mixed media files

-3DMark03: 682

- Laptop battery test: 4 hours and 28 minutes

Conclusion:

MSI wind U120 is a serious rival for Samsung NC10 and HP Mini 2140. But now the question is “will U120 be more successful than these two other netbooks?” As the review says NC10 with starting price of $440 and Mini 2140 with the starting price of $500 are some better than U120.

For the consumers who just need a netbook with bargain price first and then coming with nice feature set like 10-inch display, comfortable keyboard and delivering the performance close to the category average, Wind U120 can be the best choice of all.

No doubt that Samsung NC10 comes with more fashionable design; so, the consumers who are more sensitive and are ready to pay some more, they will surely purchase a slightly better netbook with more fashionable design and feature set like Samsung NC10.

HP mini 2140 comes with trendy sturdy eye-catching aluminum chassis but it is more expensive than most of netbooks in the market. Thus, HP Mini 2140 can bring more satisfaction with chic design and long battery life for strict users.

Linux Moblin Running on Samsung NC10: A Perfect OS for Netbooks

One big problem existed with all Linux distributions is their installing on computers. Unlike automatic process of Installing Windows operating systems that you will just need to run one CD and let it be installed by itself, for installing one of the popular Linux distribution like Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you have to use a CD or DVD sets with the vital packages on the first disc and less important packages on later ones. The second problem is related to working with Linux OS. it is somehow needed to know some commands for arranging the same freedom that you get while using one of Microsoft Windows OS.

Linux Moblin v2 Core Alpha platform based-on a Fedora kernel has just been released for Atom-based netbooks by Intel. The goal of making this OS was to keep up the price of netbooks low, meanwhile to bring fast Boot up and performance and smooth running of network connectivity on these slow netbooks.

Laptop magazine folk installed this initial just-released Moblin OS ( without any extra software tool and packages) on a Samsung NC10 through a USB drive and boot it up and run off it of the LiveUSB, They experienced fast and smooth boot and operation. This is very important feature as Netbooks come with slow guts like slow low-powered Atom CPU and 512MB or 1GB of Ram as default. So, you have read manytimes that when netbooks boot up Vista or Windows XP, they have to take 40sec up to 1 minute.

But, if you watch the Video made by laptop magazine folk, you will see that the NC10 netbook takes only few seconds to boot up Moblin through the USB driver. The good part is that the OS uses very little memory.

Also, they found out that Wi-Fi, LAN connectivity and trackpad and mouse worked properly without any tweaking and teasing.

Apple iPhones are less costly to produce than RIM’s BlackBerry Storm

It seems like Apple iPhone's major competitor, Research In Motion (RIM) is in serious trouble with the latest version of its BlackBerry smart phone. The BlackBerry Storm the latest version of RIM's smart phone has a higher production cost compared to the iPhone3G. According to iSuppli, a reputed electronics market research firm, the production cost of one BlackBerry Storm is higher than Apple iPhone. Through the iSuppli Teardown Analysis Service, the company found out that the production of one unit of BlackBerry Storm is $202.89 compared to iPhone 3G's $174.33. Moreover, the firm said that the BlackBerry storm is more complex than iPhone 3G.

eWeek.com reports:

iSuppli also discovered the Storm is more complex than the iPhone 3G, with the total component count at 1,177, of which 151 are mechanical in nature. The iPhone 3G includes 1,116 components. iSuppli determined the most important of these components is the Storm's touch-screen, which makes it a serious competitor to Apple's smartphone.

The BlackBerry Strom is RIM's first touch screen phone. Released in November, the phone is sold through Verizon. Verizon hoped that BlackBerry Storm would be a tough competitor of the iPhone 3G, which is sold through AT&T. However, that is not happening, Apple iPhone still have the competitive edge over BlackBerry Strom for its lower production

Apple iPhone is the most popular phone for games download in USA

Apple's iPhone makes it to the top once again. comScore, a reputed market research firm, reported that, among the top ten phones used to download games in USA, the first, second, third and seventh spots are taken over by four different models of the Apple iPhone. The 8GB Apple iPhone 3G took over the number one spot followed by the original 8GB and 16 GB version. The old 16 GB iPhone is in the seventh position.

PC World reports:

Also, the iPhone and iPod dominated the list of finalists recently named in a competition sponsored by the Independent Games Festival Mobile.

A total of about 1.1 million U.S. owners of the four iPhone models have used the device for downloading games, according to comScore.

According to comScore analyst, Alistair Hill, the main reason behind this popularity is Apple's sound marketing strategy. Now, hundreds and thousands of people know about the App Store which is also very easy to use. Apple also allows gamers to develop games in a very easy and transparent way. Prior to that, mobile phone companies tried to gain large amount of revenue from mobile phone gaming. As a result, developers had to develop hundred different versions of one game to be used in different mobile phones. Apple changed that scenario.

Windows 7: Should it Come Sooner or at the Right Time?

Kelly Poe is an ordinary person but he is now in the media headlines because he has called on Microsoft to release Windows 7 earlier than the due time. Kelly Poe thinks that the beta version of windows 7 is excellent and there is no need to delay the release. To be honest with you, I really cannot understand the logic behind such a call. Microsoft suffered a lot of criticism when they released windows Vista and a lot of problems were found in it. Now, many people are waiting eagerly for windows 7 because Vista but could not satisfy them.

But that sorry, I feel that Microsoft should be very careful about the release of the newer version. They should not listen to the people who lend themselves to be a fan of windows but will not support Microsoft is any serious flaw can be found after Windows 7 is released.

Cheapest Laptop in the World: 20$ Laptop Coming on 3 February 2009 in India?

If it really comes to the market then it will indeed be the cheapest laptop in the world. At last, there’ll be a rival for OLPC. Well, I am a bit skeptical because India is not exactly the place from where you can find the production of hardware parts in large quantities. China is famous for that and most of the big companies have set up manufacturing plants in China for this matter. So, I am waiting very clearly to see whether there can be a laptop for twenty dollar.

Times of India wrote:

The $10 laptop project, first reported in TOI three years ago, has come as an answer to the $100 laptop of MIT's Nicholas Negroponte that he was trying to hardsell to India. The $10 laptop has come out of the drawing board stage due to work put in by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT-Madras and involvement of PSUs like Semiconductor Complex. “At this stage, the price is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down,” R P Agarwal, secretary, higher education said.

It seems that Indian government is behind it and they have done some good investment of money and resources behind it. If it becomes successful then I have to admit that Indian government will be one step ahead in making a bigger impact than OLPC.

Ferrari 1200: Acer’s new gaming laptop is on the block

Gaming laptops are very popular now days and Acer has released its latest gaming laptop, Ferrari 1200. The reason behind such naming is the branding contract with the Italian racing car manufacturer. It is a great machine that comes with pretty high powered hardware ideal for gamers.

Slash Gear reports:

The Acer Ferrari 1200 has a 12.1-inch LED-backlit display, AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core mobile processor and up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, but we all know that far more important is the carbon-fiber cover, anodized-metal touchpad (said to resemble the car’s pedals) and soft-touch coating.

Buyers will also get a Bluetooth mouse, SATA HDD with large storage capacity, DVD drive, Dolby Home Theatre audio, WiFi, webcam, bio-protection fingerprint reader, and last but not least, a Xpress VoIP phone with PureZone technology.

Acer’s 10inch Aspire One netbook will have SSD and Linux Linpus

So far many news items have been spread in Web about 10-in Acer Aspire One. However, this time Acer has announced its latest plan for its upcoming 10-in Aspire One which will be launched in mid-February.

Acer is trying to keep its 10-in Aspire One customizable for its consumers like its 8.9-in Aspire One. In July 2008, Acer launched its 8.9-in Aspire One line of netbook which some later placed Asus on top in this section of laptop market.

Today Acer mentioned clearly that it would keep the options for Linux OS and SSD hard drives for its 10-in Aspire One. The Linux OS will be Linpus and the SSD will come up with 16GB capacity.

However, Acer will launch the initial model with the price tag of £299 and without these the two options mentioned above.

The other information mentioned in previous entries is correct about this netbook. You can read

Display Comparison: Late MacBook Pro 15 vs. ThinkPad W700 vs. Mini 9 vs. ThinkPad T60

Everyday, we talk about conventional netbooks and laptops because most people need these types of computing devices. But there are some professional users like photographers, animators, engineers that they have to think of some exclusive desktop or laptop computers to handle their special expectations. Of course the top laptop manufacturers like HP, Lenovo, Dell and Apple etc, have not neglected these types of consumers and already have allocated one of their laptop lines up to these expensive professional laptops like Dell’s Precision workstation laptops, Lenovo’s ThinkPad W series notebooks, HP’s EliteBook and mobile workstation laptops or Apple MacBook Pro 15 laptops.

However, although suitable laptops for working photographers are expensive and come with pro display, Dell Mini 9 is a netbook that with its ordinary quality LED display and typical feature set can be a nice potable computing device for photographers. not only the netbook can be placed inside a Think Tank Photo Streetwalker backpack aside camera and the gear easily, but it will operate the basic computing functionality for the users and the display demonstrates pictures with enough color accuracy to make them satisfied.

I found a good review written by Rob Galbraith- a professional photographer compared displays of three important laptops for pro photographers (MacBook Pro 15,ThinkPad W700 and ThinkPad T60)and a netbook (Dell Mini 9) from different aspects like color accuracy, sharpness, viewing angles etc.

I recommend all you photographers to read this review in details.

Here I have only mentioned the conclusion of the review.

The author has evaluated these four displays by several monitor profiling package (including a colorimeter, spectrophotometer and software). Also, the Eizo ColorEdge CE240W desktop display was used as the reference monitor for the review and he looked at 81 pictures (in these four displays and the desktop display) which were mixture of black and white and colour.

The writer thinks that “the fact that the W700's screen can even be discussed as a possible desktop screen replacement, though, is a testament to what Lenovo has achieved. On balance, it's the best laptop display we've ever seen, rivaled only by the ThinkPad T60 and its 1400 x 1050 pixel FlexView display from a couple of years ago.

Coming up the middle is the Dell Inspiron Mini 9, the laptop whose price tag should mean it can't compete on screen quality, but somehow does. For those who can accept that its usable viewing angle is quite narrow, it rewards with surprisingly good color accuracy.

Macs are no longer at the top of the laptop display heap in our minds.”

- Lenovo ThinkPad W700 comes with 17 inch matte-surface main display with 1920 x 1200 pixel, resolution and dual fluorescent (CCFL) backlights.

-IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60 comes with 14.1-inch matte display with 1400 x 1050 pixel FlexView display.

- Apple MacBook Pro 15 comes with all-glass minor-like 15.4 inch LED glossy widescreen display with 1440 x 900 pixel resolution.

-Dell Mini 9 netbook comes with 8.9 inch LED-backlit display with 1024 x 600 pixel resolution

Here are the results of profiling:

Color accuracy (Ordering the displays from best to last):

1-Lenovo ThinkPad W700

2-IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60

3-Dell Inspiron Mini 9

4- Apple late-2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch

Sharpness (Ordering the displays from best to last):

1- Lenovo ThinkPad W700 (exceptionally sharp)

2- ThinkPad T60

3-Dell Inspiron Mini 9

4- Apple late-2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch

Viewing angle flexibility (Ordering the displays from best to last):

1- IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60

2- Lenovo ThinkPad W700

3- Apple late-2008 MacBook Pro 15 inch

4- Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Display Gamut(Ordering the displays from best to last):

1- Lenovo ThinkPad W700 (gamut nearly matches sRGB)

2- IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T60

3- late-2008 MacBook Pro 15

4- Dell Mini 9

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer Skeptics about Netbooks

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer that netbooks are going to be vanished soon. You should already know that the condition of AMD is not good and they have suffered massive loss in 2008. Well, 2008 was not a very good year for most companies and it was not unnatural for AMD to suffer such huge loss. However, I am surprised to see that the CEO Dirk Meyer is now against netbook. You know that netbook is very popular and almost all the major laptop maker some kind of every inexpensive netbooks.

In fact, just the other day, we heard about $200 netbook. So, it seems that in such a bad economic condition many people will go for inexpensive netbooks. AMD CEO Dir Meyer has other ideas and he seems that people will not become too much interested about netbook because very soon major laptop makers will try to Dirk standard of netbook or laptop at an affordable time. For example, only in 2007, any good laptop would cost more than $1000. Now, you can find good standard of quality laptop which is just $500 to $700. Secondly he feels that notebooks are not good for many functions and it is true.

When it comes to playing games and watching movies, netbooks are not good at all but they are only good for basic computing like doing word processing and internet browsing. So, many consumers may feel that it is not a good bargain to buy a netbook for $200 to $400 dollar while they can buy just a quality standard of laptop within $600 to $800 dollar. Well, I don’t agree with AMD CEO because he has completely overlooked the emerging third world economy. He has to remember that it is hardware products and emerging countries of Asia like India, China have expanding and growing market. The people in Asian countries are every price sensitive and you can understand that $200 is big difference in almost all the countries.

So, I feel that netbook will have very good future simply because many consumers in Asia, Africa and Latin America will be interested about netbook. Secondly, most people do not have laptop in the world. In the past, notebooks are considered to be like fashion statement but now the condition is just opposite. Now-a-days, many people think that laptop is just as useful as mobile phone. They would surely love to have a netbook for browsing internet or doing basic computing work like word processing while they are on the car or on the bus. Netbookes are affordable and they give us ability to be really mobile. So, I feel that AMD CEO Dirk Meyer should change his attitude and give netbooks the due importance.

People like Dirk Meyer said they always think that only America and America is the important market. They do not think this matter that mobile phone companies like Nokia have been experiencing their growth mainly from Asian countries not from American countries. The reality is that many people in America now own a laptop, notebook or netbook and for them it is not a big deal. The main battle ground is Asian market and there is really a lot of room for growth when it comes to inexpensive laptop. That is why; people like Dirk Meyer should try to know more about global economy and should not be focused on American market. The conditions of American market may not improve in the next few months because it is suffering a very bad kind of economic recession.

What is your idea about whole thing?

Offline Facility for Gmail Users

Google is always good at giving a free facility for all of its products and services. Think of Blogger/Blogspot. You have everything free it here and even you can earn money with it by putting advertisements. Now, I could find another exciting new feature of their popularity e-mail service called Gmail. You can now use Gmail but even when you do not have Internet connection. It is called offline facility and it’ll be really helpful when you but you are on the go.

Of course, you can easily understand that without Internet fascinating, you cannot and do everything with your e-mail but still, this is a great feature and it will help people like me who do not have a reliable Internet all the time. For example, last night my Internet was not working well and I needed to have access to my e-mail. I could do nothing but a seat in the computer and felt helpless. However, with the new offline facility from Google, But I will be able to at least have some kind of access to my emails because the offline facility will display my inbox by saving some information in the hard disk.

OLPC XO 2.0 is ready to be launched this year

Picture of the next generation OLPC XO 2.0 surfaced on the net. The picture was taken by Tariq Krim, founder and CEO of Netvibes at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. As you all know, it was the OLPC XO-1 that started the trend of ultra-portable netbook which was later popularized by Asus and Acer through their lower price laptop products. The OLPC XO 2.0 will also start the second wave in the netbook world. One of the major features of the OLPC XO 2.0 it is a dual screen laptop that looks like a book. The device would cost $75.

Guardian.co.uk reports:

"The first generation is a laptop that can be a book; the next generation will a book that can be a laptop," he says. "That's the switch.

"One important thing about the XO-2 is that we're going to do it as an open source hardware programme. The XO-1 was really designed as if we were Apple. The XO-2 will be designed as if we were Google - we'll want people to copy it. We'll make the constituent parts available. We'll try and get it out there using the exact opposite approach that we did with the XO-1.

Mr. Negroponte said that they designed the device in such because everybody said that it was not possible. The new dual-screen OLPC XO 2.0 will have touch screen haptic keyboard with force-feedback.

OLPC 2.0: The next phase of One Laptop Per Child

Despite laying off half of its employee’s and losing some of its sponsors, OLPC founder, Nicholas Negroponte, did not give up his dream. OLPC reorganized its operation and Negroponte and Charles Kane, President and CEO, One Laptop Per Child is planning to release OLPC 2.0 a new netbook that would be smaller, more efficient and consume low power.

On January 1, 2009, Negroponte announced that OLPC is going to lay off 50% of its employees. The main reason behind this is economic recession. The G1G1 program in which the company heavily invested end up in huge loss and due to financial difficulties of the companies, major sponsors like Nortel, EBay, SES, pulled out of the program. Due to this financial hardship they had the organization had to bring down expense of its OLPCs below $500,000. Now, the company has reorganized its goal. It is now going to focus on Middle East and Africa. In Latin America, OLPC observed great success especially Peru and Uruguay. OLPC has decided to start a separate office in these two regions. In addition, the company will start producing Generation 2.0, the next generation of OLPC netbook. OLPC will also a cost free connectivity program. It will also handover the development of its Sugar Operating System to the open source community.

US veterans won $20 million lawsuit claim over stolen laptop

US war veterans won a $20 million lawsuit against The Veteran Affairs Department. The veterans sued the department over the theft of a VA laptop PC stolen in 2006. The laptop contained files and other personal identifiable information of millions of veterans including names, birth dates, social security numbers and it could pose a potential risk of identity theft for the veterans.

Federal Computer Week reports

Attorneys for the VA and the veterans filed legal papers Jan. 27 in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to settle the suit, and a judge must approve the terms of the settlement. The class-action lawsuit, filed in 2006, asked for $1,000 in damages for every veteran whose data was put at risk.

After the theft, VA offered the veterans at risk to provide credit protection. Fortunately, law enforcement officials later recovered the laptop and found out that the datas were not stolen.
