Dell Mini 10 Available for Purchase Only Sub-$400; & First Mini 10 hands-on:

In my earlier post I mentioned the availability of Mini 10 at QVC for pre-order wih the price tag of $560. Dell has launched the same Mini 10 in its website with cheaper price tag of $399.
The Mini 10 available at Dell comes with the following feature set:

Color: Obsidian Black
Processor: Intel Atom Processor Z520 (1.33GHz/533MHz FSB/512K Cache)
Memory: 1GB of RAM
Hard Drive: 160G, 2.5inch, 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Wireless: Wireless 802.11g (1397) Mini Card
Webcam: Integrated 1.3M Pixel Webcam
Battery: 24WHr Lithium-Ion Battery (3-cell)
OS: Windows XP Home Edition SP3

There is no option for 802.11n Wi-Fi for this laptop I am afraid. also there is no Bluetooth. However, you can purchase the External optical drive with this netbook with up to $80.

The striking features of Mini 10 consisting of :
- Multi-touch trackpad
- edge-to-edge display with 16:9 ratio which is suitable to watch HD movies!
- HDMI out port rather than typical VGA out
- Polished design in different 6 color options
-Dell offers plenty of upgrade options, none of which I have tested, including the choice of Ubuntu and Vista operating systems, an internal TV tuner and HD resolution, Bluetooth, Wireless WAN, internal GPS, larger storage and memory capacity plus the option for solid state over hard disk drives ( now you can not findany of them to customize the current Mini 10 available at Dell website).

Rundown of Mini 10 hands-on :

Krisabel.ctv.ca thinks that:
Pros:
Dell Mini 10 gets the same keyboard style of Mini 12 ( with flat keys) The keyboard is nice and comfortable. However, it offers more glossy diplay. Also, it looks more fashionable and expensive because of its more polished finish.
the netbook with 1.6GHz CPU and 2GB of RAM could easily handle several applications including Google Earth, Picasa, and iTunes simultaniously. The boottime is fast.
Dell offers plenty of upgrade options, including the choice of Ubuntu and Vista operating systems, an internal TV tuner and HD resolution, Bluetooth, Wireless WAN, internal GPS, larger storage and memory capacity plus the option for solid state over hard disk drives that will be available later.

Cons
:
Unfortunately, the battery run time is short compared to many netbooks. The battery lasted only two hours while turning off the power management settings,Wi-Fi on, and running a music track on an endless loop.another big complain is the lack of Bluetooth. The third problem was the HDMI. The writer tried to play HD video and watch it on its TV through HDMI but he was not able to. He only could stream some simple YouTube videos.Additionally, "The Mini 10 makes for a poor media centre PC." Price is not aggrasive compared to the current 10-inch mini notebook in the market.

Facebook and Laptop Theft

It is a funny story but a true story. I feel that there is some elements in this story that can easily become a Hollywood movie. Corey Kinney is just 19 years old and he was in a Starbucks shop in Bradenton USA. He is perhaps addicted to Facebook like many people. Then, he felt the urge to check his profile and he had no desktop or laptop there. So, he saw another person using his laptop and he requested the person to lend him the laptop to check his Facebook profile. The laptop owner did not agree and Corey Kinney felt the urge to steal the laptop.

It is not clear whether Corey Kinney could check his profile or not but he got caught by the police and it may put him into deep trouble. It is clear that he will have a bad future for this offense. Well, I know that some people are too much addicted to Facebook and Twitter. Thanks God that I do not have any account to any of them and I am free to pursue my career in blogging.

Dell Challenges Psion over Netbook Trademark

Laptop maker Dell has been involved in a dispute with Psion, a consumer hardware company, over the trademark right of ‘netbook’. Psion is reportedly the first company that used the term Netbook which is now used to refer a separate line of laptops that are small in size and cost effective. Psion registered the trademark of Netbook in different regions and used the term Netbook for its product, ‘Psion netBook’, but the production of the product was stopped in 2003, and in the same year, Psion came up with another product named ‘NETBOOK PRO’.

Recently, Dell filed a petition to the US Patent Office, claiming to withdraw the trademark right of Netbook from Psion. Dell has said that Psion’s original netbook has been out of production for a long time now and the company has no plan to start production again. Herb Turzer, Psion senior product manager, had earlier claimed that the company actively used the term Netbook in until 2005, but Dell dismissed this claim, and accusing Mr. Turzer of lying in the sense that Psion’s last product Netbook Pro, which carried the word Netbook, came in 2003. Dell thinks that Psion has lost the control of its trademark right for Netbook and claims that the word Netbook should be allowed to be used by any company.

3.5G-equipped Eee PC 1003HA and T91 with Win 7; 1000HG WiMAX Ready

ASUS has chosen its two upcoming Eee PC 1003HA and Eee PC T91 netbooks to be its first mobile devices to run Windows 7 Beta.

The 3.5G-equipped Eee PC 1003HA and Eee PC T91 will be among the world’s first to boast 3.5G capabilities designed around Windows 7 mobile broadband architecture.

The Eee PC 1003HA is a slim device with a 10” LED-backlit display that comes with 160GB of hard disk storage and an additional 10GB of online Eee Storage. It is slated for sale exclusively through telecommunications carriers.

The Eee PC T91 tablet netbook features a 8.9- inch rotatable touchscreen

Sascha from Netbook News.de has evaluated the added a friendly-touch graphical user interface that Asus has added to this netbook recently. Also, he thinks the manufacturing quality of this netbook is remarkable comparing to Gigabyte M912 tablet.

Asus has tried to make its tablet more fashionable and portable than other Eee PC netbooks. Actually, Eee PC t91 is thinner (about 1-inch thick), smaller and lighter than other Eee PC netbooks. In the following Apple’s Mac Air, T91 comes with non-removable battery! Well, I really don’t know why Asus has tried this kind of battery. Because the experience of Mac Air or latest 17-in MacBook Pro has showed that consumers don’t admire this kind of battery. This dissatisfaction even forced Apple to release a battery replacement for MacBook Pro 2009 to give calm and confident to its consumers.

T91 netbook features Intel’s Atom Z520 processor, 1GB of RAM, 2 USB ports, SIM card slot and a DVB-T TV tuner and GPS. The T91 comes with new “chiclet” keyboard that has flatter keys. In this keyboard the right shift key has been repositioned.

ASUS also revealed Eee PC 1000HG with both WiMAX and Wi-Fi capabilities.

It will feature IEEE 802.16e; WAVE2 and Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n support in the 2.4GHz~2.7GHz and 5.1GHz~5.8GHz bands.

WiMAX is the next-generation of Wireless connectivity developing by Clearwire and its major investors Intel and Google. It is claimed that WiMAX is able to provide “wireless Internet service five times faster than the network used by Apple Inc.’s iPhone 3G”, according to the source. However, there is not hope to see the enough expansion of this network because of economic recession and $2 billion funding gap the company is struggling to fill.

In USA, WiMAX service is currently available in few regions including Baltimore and Portland, and Oregon. However the company is planning to start selling the service from the first half of 2010 through the brands of its investors such as Verizon Wireless, co- owned by Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group Plc.

Different models of Asus Eee PC netbooks don’t often have a lot of differences in terms of feature set and design. However, Asus is trying to offer different special features on its different Eee PC netbooks. For instance, Eee PC 1000H-X featuring 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 160GB hard drive is the first netbook to offer pre-installed Microsoft Office Personal 2007.

Asus As launched Eee PC 1000H-X netbook in Japan with the price tag of 57,800 yen ($617USD). Rest of Eee PC netbooks are pre-loaded with Sun’s StarOffice suite.

Staroffice comes equipped with Microsoft Office or free open source OpenOffice.org. This free software works very nice, but sometimes your information may get lost while editing a word document or an Excel document in translation, according to liliputing.

Acer and Asus Slashes the Price of their SSD-based Netbooks

Since late 2007 that the first Eee PC was released the newly-made netbook market has seen a number of new netbooks. However, only few of them have brought new styles in the market and have changed feature set of netbooks and introduced new fashions and netbook categories like some of the Asus Eee PC netbooks, Acer Aspire One, MSI Wind PC and etc.

So, it is natural that consumers move forward with the market trend and they have more desire to purchase the new netbooks of big names in the market. So, Acer and Asus are dropping the price of their SSD-based 8.9-in and 7-in netbooks for clear inventory according to digitimes,” Acer's 8GB SSD version 8.9-inch Aspire one has dropped to NT$6,999 (US$202.27) in the Taiwan market, while Asustek Computer's 7-inch Eee PC now costs around NT$6,500-7,500 and the 20GB SSD version 8.9-inch Eee PC is around NT$8,999” in Taiwan.

The new trend of 160GB HDD in netbooks has decreased the demand of short storage SSDs, also. Therefore, this high demand is the second fact to see dropping price on earlier netbooks with SSD.

Well, this is the action that Acer and Asus has taken in Taiwan and may soon we see the same thing in USA.

Acer targeting High School Market for its Netbooks

Sometimes I feel that the ongoing global economic recession is actually helping netbook makers like Asus and Acer. Acer is now the market leader in netbook segment. I have this feeling because now, I could find a news report that Acer has taken an initiative to make its netbooks popular among teachers and students in school level. It’s indeed some surprising to me because nowadays, most companies are trying to cut down on their cost and are not giving any attractive new offers are not starting any larger scale campaign. The idea is very cool and attractive: Acer is giving attractive alternative to the schools but not directly. But it will run the campaign by its channel partners.

The channel partners we’ll try to convince a school and offer the school a 30 day trial of using Acer netbooks. After the trial period finishes, the schools can either by the laptops or can decide not to continue it anymore. If the school agrees to buy some netbooks from Acer then they will get a very good discount. Acer will also help about school lab. You may wonder what channel partners will get? Of course, they will get good commission from the company but at the same time, they have something attractive for them too. They will enjoy a trip to a Caribbean country.

Well, there is nothing for me in this campaign but I am happy that tomorrow there will be a match in Champions league, Arsenal vs Roma and I will enjoy it because I am a big Arsenal fan.

- HDMI out for watching HD movies on external TV or bigger display rather than typical VGA out

- Wireless– n and Bluetooth

- 2 USB and 1 Power USB

Well, from now, I should say the first and big complaint against Mini 10 is its short battery life. The 3-cell battery will only last maximum 3 hour unlike Samsung NC10 can easily run up to 6-7 hours with its battery. The second complaint must be over its some expensive price. If you look at the price of fashionable Asus Eee 1000HE or Acer Aspire on AOD 150, you will have more interest to these netbooks because of their aggressive prices and even their battery life. However, Mini 10 comes with HDMI which none of these netbooks are able to provide it.

Here is the full Specs of Inspiron Mini 10:

CPU: Intel Atom Z520 (1.33GHz/533MHz FSB/512K L2Cache)/ Intel Atom Z530 (1.60GHz/533MHz FSB/512K L2Cache)

Lenovo to Apply Ion Platform & VIA Nano CPU to New IdeaPad S Netbooks?

Yesterday, I talked about Samsung NC20 which is the first netbook based on VIA Nano and compared it with Atom based Samsung NC10 and Eee 1000HE. Interesting is that Lenovo is going to release one of its IdeaPad Sxx netbooks with VIA Nano CPU too. Lenovo is also going to release two other IdeaPad Sxx netrbooks based on Nividia’s Ion Platform.

IdeaPad S10 is the first netbook from Lenovo that has achieved good response among the buyers since it was released. Although in prior news released three days ago, Ion platform was supposed to appear first in a nettop, it seems that Lenovo will be the first company who will use Ion Platform ( Atom CPU plus Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics processor) in its upcoming 11.6 inch and 12.1 ( and mayble a 13-inch) IdeaPad netbooks.

Additionaly Lenovo will be the second laptop make that is going to use Nano CPU in one of its 12 inch IdeaPad model too.

It turns out that Lenovo believes that Nano CPU and Ion platform both will get good response in the market. I think Lenovo thinks that by the means of the credit IdeaPad S10 brought and bright future of these two CPU and platform, it will be able increase its share of sales in market significantly.

VIA Nano-based Samsung NC20 at Amazon; Comparison with NC10/ Eee 1000HE

Surely, the upcoming 12.1-in Samsung NC20 will be the first netbook which is powered by VIA Nano processor. Actually, it will also be the very first launch of VIA Nano after a long delay (we expected it to hit the market middle of last year as some of its evaluations and comparisons with Intel Atom and other processor come out that time).

The up coming Samsung NC20 is now available for pre-order at Amazon uk with the price tag of £390.98. The netbook is powered by 1.3GHz Nano U2250 processor, 1GB of RAM featuring faster 800 MHz and 160GB HDD and Chrome9 HC3 - 128 MB integrated graphics.

( VIA Nano and Atom N280:)

VIA Nano U2250 processor features 512 KB L2 Cache, and 800MHz Front Side Bus and works with Via's VX800 chipset which contains hardware video decoders for high-definition video playback.

The just launched Intel’s Atom N280 that is paired with Intel's GN40 chipset. The chipset includes a hardware decoder for 720p high-definition video too. However Intel’s Atom N280 only comes equipped with slower 667MHz FSB (and naturally support RAMs with this with FSB too).

The netbook features 12.1" TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA ) LED backlight display and Integrated - 1.3 MP Webcam, Ethernet, IEEE 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR, 3-in-1 media card reader,3 USB ports , VGA out, audio, microphone, and Windows XP Home Edition OS.

Samsung NC10 is famous for its very comfortable keyboard and long battery run-time. Samsung NC 20 is totally identical to NC10. I think NC20 will become renowned due to its high resolution display and playing back the HD content as well as long battery life, well-to-do keyboard which is 97% of a normal keyboard ( and the size of the keys are greater than those on NC10).

Reviews and Benchmark results:

1- According to the test done by a Ukrainian site gadget on NC20, This laptop is supposed to deliver over 6 hours battery life which is enough for a 12.1-inch laptop (however, we would like to hear longer battery life more than that).

Also, this test has indicated that the VIA Nano CPU could easily handle the 720p video content (CPU load to between 30% and 50%) and for 1080p Video content the CPU load to 80% which is better that What a Atom CPU delivers.

Another advantage of NC 20 is easy access to RAM and hard drive for upgrading. Also, the test has shown that the netbook is quiet and it warms up only when it is under the maximum load.

The included laptop sleeve is an undesirable stuff that company has put aside such a fashionable netbook in the box! The good part of the chassis of netbook is that the surface doesn’t get tarnished with fingertips.

This website has compared the3D marks of NC20 with a computer powered by iCore7 CPU. Although it doesn’t give any idea about the rate of this netbok compared to other popular netbooks but it shows how much netbooks have very poor 3D performance. Due to this test, NC20 scored 138 3DMarks while the Intel computer scored 15700 VistualMarks.

2- Sascha of netbooknews.de had its hands on NC20 and could evaluate this netbook with different tests and do a video review and compared it with Samsung NC10.

According to Sascha:

Pros:

- build quality of the chassis

- Keyboard is some bigger and more spacious

- Higher screen resolution than NC10’s

- Manufacturing quality is really good

- up to 5.5 hours battery life, it is less than what NC10 delivers but it is nice yet.

Cons:

- Horrible sleeve

- Only a single mouse button rather than two separate buttons

Benchmark results:

-Boot up test: about 35 sec

-PCMark05 on NC20: 1,675 PCMark05 while Eee PC 1000HE scored 1,588 (according to laptop magazine) which is 100 points lower than NC20’s.

Also, the Atom based NC10 scored 1490 which is much less than VIA Nano-based NC20’s result.

-3DMark03 on NC20: 603 3DMarks which is marginally higher than Eee PC 1000HE’s score (588) and lower than MSI Wind U120’s (682)

- In the 2006 edition of the 3D Marks, the NC20 achieved more than 50% better result than the Nc10 with Intel Atom.

- Cinebench R10 test: the VIA-based NC20 has better result that the younger brother Atom-based NC10 netbook.

In the following you can see the unboxing video of this netbook. Also, you can find several pictures of NC20 here.

3- A person in Notebook Review Forum has written about its experience of working with its newly-arrived Samsung NC20.

According to him:

-Gorgeous screen with perfect screen resolution

- Well made netbook

- Battery at 83% shows 5 hrs 29 min remaining

- Very fast recalling XP (in about 2 seconds) after shutting the lid into sleep and then opening up

- Video HD 720p runs ok full screen (however, YouTube HD is unwatchable and like a slideshow!)

- XP boot up took only 33sec

- Sound quality is nice and very laud

- Keyboard has pretty nice tactile feedback

- It stays on laps very well

Conclusion:

From the prior tests comparing Atom and Nano CPUs ( you can see the entries after the break), we knew that Nano 1.33GHz has better performance than Atom 1.6 GHz. Even here, we have seen practically that Nano CPU with slower clock speed is totally comparable with Atom CPU with faster clock speed and even can score better some of the times. This is a big success for VIA which is unlikely rival to a leading chip maker Intel. I think the result of comparison between NC10 and NC20 totally gives this confident to consumers to trust on upcoming VIA Nano- based netbooks and of course this success will encourage more top-tire laptop makers to use this CPU in their new netbooks.

Which One Is Better? Asus Eee PC S101 vs S101H vs 1002HA

You know that there are bunch of different Eee PC netbooks out in the market and it is really more confusing to choose one netbook from Eee PC line up than from other brands in the market like Acer Aspire One, wind PC, Samsung NC10 etc.

Asus Eee PC S101, and 1002HA are recent netbooks from Asus have been launched in USA and Japan. Besides the other two, Eee S101H is now available in Japan as well. This is really confusing to choose one of these three netbooks as the come with similar features but different prices. For instance, 10-inches Eee PC 1002HA with 160GBHDD and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n is available at Buy.com with the price tag of $415 while ASUS Eee PC S101 featuring 16GB SSD and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n costs $675 at Amazon or available at B&H for $650 including Bluetooth.

Portable monkey has compared these three netbooks in details and it is really nice to read the whole of the original review.

But in nutshell, I should say that these three netbooks deliver similar performance (Although 1002HA scored lowest of all, they scored closely and practically their speeds differ hardly from one another). Eventually, it is up to you what you really require: the Eee PC with more aggressive price and more storage or you are ready pay the price to get more portability with longer battery life!

If you need Eee with cheaper price you should go for Eee 1002HA and if you need longer battery life, you should try for Eee S101. According to this review, S101H is in the middle, no man’s land…”

Asus has launched its latest Eee PC netbook- Eee PC 1000HE; at ZipZoomFly only for $390 just few days later after launching the rival netbook- Acer Aspire One AOD 150. Of course the people who have pre-ordered at Amazon or JR, they have to wait yet for their stuff.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is the nice revamped version of Eee PC 1000H. It comes with faster CPU and FSB and much better keyboard for long touch-typing.

The netbook for purchase comes equipped with 10-in display, 1.66 GHz Atom N280 CPU, 1GB (DDR2-667) of RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Windows XP Home OS and 6-cell battery. It is available now only in black color.

In the following you will find two videos about this netbook. One is unboxing and the other one is about how to upgrade the Ram of Eee 1000HE.

I love the sleek black design of this netbook. It is sheer chic.

Due to this video, upgrading Ram of Eee 1000 HE is quite easy. You will just need to remove two screws and cover. Now you can easily change the RAM with higher capacity. It is clear that no damage can happen while upgrading the RAM.

In the video, the touchpad buttons are not enough flexible and are quite stiff. And I felt the netbook was some noisy while watching the video. Also the mouse buttons make a lot of click sound. But the keyboard is better than the one on Eee 1000H.

Intel Worried about the Future of WiMax

Intel is a company which is considered to be the most successful processor maker. Intel has also invested heavily on WiMax, a technology for wireless internet. When Intel took the decision of investing a lot of money, that time most people thought that it was a wise decision and it was clear that Intel would emerge a market leader in this technology. Yes, the company has indeed emerged as the market leader in WiMax, but the problem is that WiMax in the US has lost its importance. In fact, WiMax has become almost dead before even it took off very seriously. So, it seems that the company will suffer a lot because of its wrong decision. However, the officials are hopeful because the market for this kind of technology is growing very rapidly in Asia and Europe. Think of China and India where WiMax has really become popular and the governments of those two countries and the private companies are very interested to ensure internet for all the people. WiMax is perhaps the best thing today to take broadband internet to the people living in rural areas. It is also ideal for the people living in remote village areas.
