Apple iPhone 3.1 rumor surfaces again

Another iPhone 3.1 rumor just came out from MacRumors.com. This time, Pandav, Inc. an iPhone development firm based in San Francisco Bay Area, informed MacRumors of an unreleased iPhone in their “app’s analytics.” Pandav Inc. is the developer of iBART, a public transportation guide for the San Francisco train system. MacRumors.com reports:

PinchMedia who provides the analytics for the application breaks down customer usage including what specific devices are being used. This list of devices is reported to developers using internal device identification numbers assigned by Apple. In this case, "iPhone3,1" was first spotted in Pandav's usage logs in November. This "iPhone3,1" identifier does not match up with any shipping iPhones. The last iPhone released to the public was the iPhone 3GS which carries the identification string "iPhone2,1".

Rumors of the iPhone 3.1 first surfaced in August 2009 through iPhone firmware files. This was not something very unexpected because Apple started testing the Apple iPhone 3GS eight months prior to its launch in October 2008. The testing was based around San Francisco Bay Area.

It is believed that the next generation iPhone will sport a multi-core processor and compatible with Verizon’s network.

Barnes & Noble further pushes the launch date of its Nook e-book reader

Barnes & Noble’s further pushed the launch date of its Nook e-book reader. On November 29, 2009, the publisher announced that due to large number of pre-orders, it would not be able to ship its Nook e-book readers to the stores until December 7, 2009.

Barnes & Noble’s Senior Vice President of corporate communications and public affairs, Mary Ellen Keating, said that a small number of Nook e-book readers along with demo-units will be available in their highest-volume stores starting from December 7, 2009. Earlier, Barnes & Noble was planning to launch the Nook e-book reader in some stores on November 30, 2009. Crave, CNET.com’s official gadget blog, reports:

This isn't the first time eager Nook seekers have gotten disappointing news. When B&N officially entered the burgeoning e-reader market in late October, customers placing early preorders were told they could expect the Nook to ship by the end of November.

Earlier this month, however, the bookseller pushed that date back, telling preorder customers they could expect shipment by December 11. The company declined to say how many e-readers had been preordered.

On November 20, 2009, on its official website Barnes & Noble announced that its Nook e-book reader had been officially sold out and customers who would order the device after that date would receive it on January 4, 2009.

The $259 Nook e-book reader is made to compete with Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s e-book reader. This delay is definitely a good news for Amazon because they have plenty of e-book readers for holiday season buyers.

The Chromium OS for Dell Mini 10v netbooks: Do you want it?

After the news that a Dell employee tinkered to the code of Chromium OS and enable it to run on a Dell Mini 10v netbook, Dell announced that it is offering a “customized downloadable” version of Google Chromium OS for Dell Mini 10V netbook on November 27, 2009. The Chromium OS is the open source version of Chrome OS which Google released on November 21, 2009.

The Google Chrome OS is a Linux-based Web operating system Google built to run on netbooks and the best thing about this operating system is that it takes less time to start up and it is very simple. A machine with Chrome OS takes only few seconds to boot up. eWeek reports:

With boot speed a major calling card for Chrome OS, things bode well for the nascent software, according to Dell Technology Strategist Doug Anson.

"Without a network connection, ChromiumOS is not very interesting," Anson wrote on a Dell community blog Nov. 25. "With a network connection, ChromiumOS shines. The Chromium browser is extremely fast and makes for a great Web-centric browsing experience. Boot time appears quick too - about 12 seconds from hitting the power button.

This is a good news from Chrome OS but analysts believe that it would take another five to ten years for Google Chrome OS being widely adopted as an OS. Security is still a major issue in case of cloud computing.

If you are interested to run the Chromium OS on your Dell Mini 10v netbook then you need a flash drive with a minimum space of 8GB on it. Once you download it, you would have to move an image "ChromiumOS_Mini10v_Nov25.img" onto the flash drive and plug it into you netbook. Here is the link to the image:

http://linux.dell.com/files/cto.

There is a downside of this whole thing. In order to enjoy the Chromium OS's full potential, you need an Internet connection. The built-in Broadcom Wi-Fi in Dell Mini 10v is functional but unstable. It might take up 5-10 minutes for the Chromium OS network connection manager to pin-point the Wi-Fi access points. Last but not the least, the key is minimally tested so you would have to use it on your own risk.

Windows 7 is taking over Mac OS X

It looks like Windows is reaching for its rightful place in the OS market. According to the data of Net Applications, an Internet metrics vendor, on November 28 and November 29, 2009, of all the computers that were online, around 5%-5.14% were run by Windows 7. The two-day average was higher than Apple’s market average of 5% for the week of November 15-21. PC World reports:

"It's safe to say that Windows 7's daily share did peak above Mac's weekly share," said Vince Vizzaccaro, executive vice president at Net Applications, in an e-mail today. Vizzaccaro said his company had not yet compiled daily averages for Mac OS X, something that would be necessary to compare Windows 7's weekend numbers with the same dates for the Mac.

After the devastating sales result of Windows Vista, Microsoft made sure that Windows 7 fulfills all the needs of the readers. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, announced the release of Beta Version at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2009. The beta version which observed an initial 2.5 million downloads was widely appreciated by the tech analysts. The OS was finally released on October 22, 2009.

In the week of November 15 to November 21, Windows average stood at 4.15% which was lower compared to Mac OS X weekly average of 5% but Vizzaccaro was sure that Windows 7 would take over Mac OS x for good and it would happen pretty soon. During the week of November 15-21, Windows’ overall market share stood at 92.64% compared to Apple’s October share of 92.52%. Vizzaaccaro thinks that there will be a major surge in Windows usage by the end of this month which is not unexpected but if there is a continuous rise in Windows market share, it would signal major trend change.

NVIDIA confirm’s Tegra-based tablet but it is not finalized yet

NVIDIA has developed a new tablet called the Tegra Tablet. News of the tablet came out the in the beginning of November. The NVIDIA Tegra Tablet is powered by Windows CE. It has a resistive touchscreen measuring 15-16 inches. The device has been built by ICD. Recently, Engadget received a prototype of the device. It said:

the device on hand was quite literally rough around the edges, but what we saw was appetite-whetting. The overall construction is under an inch thin, 720p video playback was excellent, and there's even a terrific-looking wireless recharge station cum base accessory -- think of Palm's Touchstone, only enlarged and magnetized to the point where it can support the whole tablet in an upright position.

The Tegra, which has been developed by NVIDIA, is used in smartphones, PDAs, MIDs. For example, Microsoft’s Zune HD is running on Tegra. The Tegra tablet is now at its developing stage and NVIDIA is trying to make it more user friendly. The company is also looking forward to get into a contact with T-Mobile to market the product.

Consumer electronics are a winner this Black Friday

Black Friday 2009 has started and lots of shoppers are now on a buying spree. Big box stores and low end stores are observing major crowds while high-end and few apparel retailers did not observe much traffic. Stores like Walmart, Target, J.C. Penny, Best Buy saw large crowds. Consumer electronics products are the biggest winner this year but sales of jewelry and cookware also generated significant amount of sales revenue. The Wall Street Journal reports:

While still very early in the holiday season, the more modestly priced stores seem to be seeing robust demand, while more mid-tier and upper-end are having a slower go of it.

"Most people are here to get the compelling door busters and traffic has significantly died as those have sold out," said Lisa Walters, principal at Retail Eye Partners, a retail research firm.

Crowd controlling was a major issue for retailers this year. Walmart stores around the nation remained open all night to avoid crowd rush. Sam’s Club had forty police officers to handle the crowd. Many people are also doing their Christmas shopping on Black Friday.

Black Friday 2009: Online vs. Offline retailers

Rise in online sales put major retailers in worries. Target Corp., J.C.Penney co., Best Buy are now trying hard to maintain the flow of customers throughout the holiday season by giving out special offers. Though the U.S economy is showing signs of recovery, the jobloss claims is in the double digits and even many affluent families are now spending money cautiously looking for special offers. The Wall Street Journal reports:

Amazon.com Inc. joined the fray with a "Black Friday Deals Week" which began Monday with a host of limited-time deals. Executives at the largest online retailer by revenue also promised to scour competitors' Black Friday store specials and meet or beat their prices.

"You can get great Black Friday deals on Thanksgiving Day and on Black Friday on Amazon," said Paul Ryder, Amazon's vice president of consumer electronics, adding, "When it is three in the morning and you are thinking about getting up" to join a Black Friday queue at a store, Amazon hopes users go online.

Through their official websites, retailers are offering various Black Friday deals and many of them continues all the way to the end of the holiday season. According to Paul Leiwand, Vice President, Booz & Co., such extension makes perfect sense because there are will lots of shopping for gifts that are coming in the later part of the season.

Speaking of shopping, if you are interested to know about the Black Friday highlights offered by various retailers visit:

Acer Experienced Slight Increase in Sales for Windows 7 OS

Windows 7 operating system, the latest OS from Microsoft, was officially launched in October 24 and since then laptop market has got a little boost. However, sales have not been increased as much as it was expected. Acer has revealed that its sales since the launch of Windows 7 have been increased, but it was not a huge boost. It might be disappointing because Windows 7 has overall got positive reviews from the users.

Well, the thing is that many companies would start giving their orders for new computers from the first quarter of 2010 as they are now examining Windows 7. So, a boost in laptop sales could come early next year. The biggest advantage of Windows 7 is that it does not have the problems that users faced with its predecessor Vista.

After Black Friday is Cyber Monday Necessary?

Black Friday and Cyber Monday take place in the space of just 4 days. Tomorrow is 27 November and it is the day of Black Friday 2009. Then there is Cyber Monday on 30 November 2009. The basic idea is that retail shoppers give hefty discount on Black Friday while online retailers do the same on Cyber Monday. However, this time, we can see that retail shoppers are using Internet very good way. You can find all kind of information in Internet. Many people will surely buy the products they want and thus, Cyber Monday is becoming useless.
I think that it is better that from next year, the two shopping festivals should be merged and should be celebrated two days continuously. This will be good for consumers. Right now, many consumers will spend a lot of money and they will have not attraction towards Cyber Monday 2009 unless there is really something extra ordinary.
What do you think about it?

Apple’s Black Friday sales has already started in Australia and New Zealand

Apple has started its one day Black Friday sales in Australia and New Zealand. Sales in other countries will start at expected times. Apple, unlike other big box retailers, is not so famous for giving out serious Black Friday deals. Among its Macbook series, Apple is offering discounts on iMac and MacBook Pro. MacRumors.com reports:

The only Macs seeing discounts in Apple's sales are the iMac and MacBook Pro, with discounts corresponding to about US$120 on all models, equaling about 8% on low-end models down to about 4-5% on high-end models. The iPod touch is seeing discounts of approximately 9-10% across all models, and the iPod nano is being offered at approximately a US$10 discount (6% off on 8GB model and 4.5% off 16 GB model). Also featured is the Apple TV with a discount of approximately 8%.

Other major items in one day-sale include Time Capsule, AirPort products, Nike+ hardware, iWork, In-Ear Headphones, Magic Mouse, and Wireless Keyboard. Apple is also selling a large number of third-party accessories and softwares.

Core 2 ULV vs Core 2 Duo: A major source of confusion in Black Friday 2009

In this Black Friday retailers are offering many doorbusters on netbooks and laptops but not all of them are really so great deal. Laptops that costs less actually packs low powered machineries. You will find that many retailers are offering 15 inch laptops from $300 or less. These laptops are equipped with single-core CPU. If you planned to buy a laptop with Celeron processor make sure you check out for Celeron sticker on the display model.

Another major source of confusion is the CULV processor. There are Intel Core 2 CULV processors and Intel Core 2 Duo processors. The former is used in ultra-portable laptops and provides better performance than netbooks and extends the battery life but it is not so powerful. On the contrary, the Intel Core 2 Duo processors are faster.

It becomes more problematic now because many large bodied laptops are coming with ULV processors such as the new Asus UL50AG. The device has a 15 inch screen but its ULV processor is not so faster than that of Asus UL30A, the slimmer and ultra-portable model of Asus. On the other hand, there is Toshiba A505-S6980, which has a faster processor but weighs more and also thicker.

How do you know you are getting an ULV processor or just regular processor? You should check out the specs first. If it is a 1.3GHz speed processor then it is a ULV. If you want to buy a laptop with ULV processor then you should buy 13inch or smaller laptops. If you want to buy larger ones then go for non-ULV processors.

Black Friday 2009: Beware of shopping traps

Many of you are still going through the Black Friday ads to find your favorite notebook or LCD TV at a “never before imagined price.” Well, be cautious, because many of the doorbusters are not actually doorbusters but cheap promotions. Here are some major Black Friday shopping traps you should be aware of:

  • While writing about Black Friday deals, several times, I found out that retailer does not mention the price of a product unless you add it to your cart. Another ploy is showing an item’s real price after mail-in rebate. Another variant is while buying netbooks at a cheaper price you would have to subscribe to a contract. The Washington Post reports:

Even if you're aware that mail-in rebates are involved, Jim Willcox, Consumer Reports' senior editor for electronics, says that you should be honest with yourself about how diligent you will be in following up with the paperwork involved. It's well known in marketing circles that rebate offers are going to cost manufacturers less than actual discounts or price cuts, because a certain percentage of buyers simply won't send in for them. If you're likely to be in that group, then you're not getting the advertised deal.

  • One most important thing about items with mail-in rebates is that you should never gift such items because the gift receiver would have to provide a copy of the receipt and the UPC code from the product’s package to get the rebate.
  • Many of you are enticed by deals like $10 kitchen appliance or 32 inch TV for $300 but according to DealNews.com’s CEO, Dan de Grandpre, these products are of poor quality products and many of these door busters are offered just to lure shoppers. For example, if you see any product with an unknown brand name or third-tier brand, beware of it. You might get into some nasty surprise.
  • Another thing about door buster is that they are very much limited in number so your chance to get your hands on one of them is one in a million and even if you get one, the sales person might come up and say that you should get a good quality television. In reality these door buster deals are just another way to lure customers.
  • Shoppers should also beware of store policy changes. Before buying any product, you should ask the sales staff regarding the return policy.
  • So, what can you do protect yourself? Do a lot of research before you decide to buy any product with doorbuster deals on it. Make sure that the product is worth all the hardships you would have to go through. Do not go on an impulsive buying spree. Make a list and stick with it. It would be better if you refrain yourself from buying any big ticket item on Black Friday because retailers will keep on offering deals throughout the holiday season. Even if you buy any expensive item make sure you buy from a top reliable brand.
