Apple tablet PC: Will it change the publishing industry forever?

Every body is now eagerly waiting for Apple tablet PC. The rumor of Apple developing a tablet PC has been out for a long time and many tech industry specialists and financial analysts expressed their ideas on how the device would affect the industry? What type of services it can offer?


On January 22, 2010, Mike Abramsky, RBC Capital Markets, the corporate and investment banking division of Royal Bank of Canada, predicted that Apple’s iSlate tablet PC would become of the most profitable product creating a new growth sector for the company. The sales price of Apple tablet will affect its sales figure. Abramsky predicted that if the Apple tablet PC costs $500 it would made the device very popular selling a staggering five million units, fetching the company sales revenue worth $2.8 billion in the first year. If its priced at $800 then the sell would be around 1 million units with a revenue of $777 million.


John Brand, Research director, Hydrasight said he believes that Apple’s tablet would become a niche product that would not catch on with home or office users. Even Apple’s brand power would not be able to attract consumers. The devices are designed to be held in the crook of the arm which does not suit work styles of concentrated effort, especially for long periods of time.


Apple is aggressively talking with publishers to bring their content on Apple tablet. It will offer greater control over their content and pricing provided by the publishers. This is completely opposite of Amazon Kindle’s “Agency model.” Apple did not show the device to any book publisher but said that the device has a 10 inch readable screen. The software of Apple tablet will be the key to reading experience. Apple tablet will start a new era in publishing industry that can be compared to the transition from Black and White to color television. Though it is said that Apple’s device would cost around $1000 but it would not be that much expensive. A large collection of e-books can not be expected until mid-2010.

A group employees from New York Times has been working in Apple’s head quarter in Cupertino California. They are developing a “large-screen version” of the New York Times’ iPhone application which incorporates video for the Apple tablet.


Condé Nast Publications, publisher of 18 magazines, and HarperCollins Publishers were also approached by Apple. Condé Nast issued a news release which says that the publisher will soon release a digital version of its men’s magazine, GQ, for the iPhone, iPod Touch. It also admitted that it is developing content for Apple tablet.


Apple has been in discussion with the educational arm of McGraw-Hill to bring its

e-textbook contents on Apple tablet. Apple tablet would also feature McGraw-Hill’s “Connect online learning system” which has been jointly developed by McGraw-Hill and Apple. The system helps professors to manage student home works and test. The system also enables students to watch video and read textbook materials and complete their assignments. The two companies have been talking for about a year. For a long time, have been working to bring its content into the iTunes music store. The company is also one of the partners in CourseSmart, an e-textbook company that sells thousands of e-books on the iPhone and iPod Touch


The Apple tablet will come with a front facing video camera which might include facial recognition feature and video conferencing. For a long time, Apple iPhone users have been asking to include video conferencing feature on their favorite phones. Consumers in UK believe that price will drive the sales of Apple tablet. VoucherCodes.co.uk conducted a survey on 3,000 consumers. It came out that 54% of the consumers would consider buying the Apple tablet. Only 25% would buy it if the price is right. 46% respondents said that the would spend £250 for Apple tablet.


Web browsing, e-book download and reading capability (54%), magazine and newspaper reading (48%), read and write documents (26%), blogs (20%), adult material (7%), movie download and viewing on a high-resolution screen, music download and playing capability, converting handwriting in to text are some of the most preferred features of the Apple tablet PC.
