Apple iTunes would have new TV show rental services in September

Apple is planning to introduce a new TV show rental service on iTunes at its annual music event on September 7, 2010 before the starting of the new prime-time TV season.

Apple’s $.99 TV show rental service would enable users to rent shows and watch the program within the next 48 hours of the purchase. Already Apple has a movie rental service on its iTunes store which enables user to rent movies and watch within a specific period.

Bloomberg, which first gave out the news, said that Apple is now in talks with major studios including CBS and Walt Disney and News Corp.’s Fox Studios. Mr. Jobs a member of the board of Disney and also the company’s largest shareholder since the studio purchased Pixar Animation studios in 2006.

This new TV show rental program would also replace iTunes subscription service for television on which Apple is said to have been since 2005.

With this new service, Apple user would get easy access to the popular TV shows and would also make Apple devices such as iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch more attractive to consumers. The latest episodes would be available for Apple’s rental service within 24 hours since their broadcast and will be commercial free.

In addition, iTunes would become the biggest retailer of music and mobile applications and compete with companies like Netflix Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Hulu LLC, which offer their own online video services.
