Social networking sites are not only popular among younger people but older people as well. A large portion of the users of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn consists of people who are fifty years and older. These people use social networking websites to connect with their grandchildren, childhood friends and school friends.
Unfortunately, Facebook, the most popular social networking site, does not take these older users into account. Currently, Facebooks ad targets people aged between 13 and 64 years not more than that.
In November 2009, leading research firm, AC Nielsen, published a study which revealed that Facebook’s ranking improved from number 45 to number 3 on the list most popular sites among seniors.
According to the Washington-based Pew Research Center and American Life Project survey, in 2009, adults aged 65 and older accounted for 4 percent among people who logged on to social networking sites on a typical day, which jumped to 13 percent at present. This is a huge increase and these people are among the most active users of social networking sites.
Though 13 percent seems a small portion but AC Nielsen report says that this demographic is very important because they have “more disposable income and leisure time” than other people.
However, these 13 percent does not include the Baby Boomers. The oldest Baby Boomers are starting to turn 65 years meaning more people are going to be added in this age range.
With rising popularity of Facebook among people, a new market would be created for the social networking site to explore.
