Google movie rental service is coming soon

After Apple, now Google is said to be starting its own “pay-per-view” movie rental service. News reports came out that Google is now going to start a movie rental service via its video website, Youtube, and the search engine giant is in talks with various studios.

The service would charge people $5 to rent movies and they would have to watch it within a 48-hour period. Up to this, everything is fine but the challenge is enabling users to get this service on TV. Currently, there are several media center OSes like Boxee, XBMC, and Windows Media Center that supports YouTube but their technology is not enough for this type of service and this is where Google TV comes in.

Google announced Google TV at the Google I/O conference in May 2010. Built on Android 2.1 and Google Chrome Browser, the Google TV brings together Internet and regular television. Some of the television would come with pre-installed Google TV programme and while some would require an external set-top box. Here is a video clip showing how Google TV would work:

The major short coming of Google TV is that it does not have its own service like that of Apple TV.

Google TV partnered with Sony and Logitech and chipmaker, Intel for the processor and Best Buy. It would become available in Fall 2010.
