Rumor is out that Facebook and Skype are planning to get into a partnership. The two are planning to integrate SMS, voice and video chat and Facebook Connect. The two would also integrate their contact list. This would enable Facebook users to call their friends on Facebook via Skype.
The new features would become available on Skype 5.0 beta which would come out in next few weeks.
This is a great strategic advantage for both the companies. On Facebook’s side, the popular social networking website has limited messaging services. It does not have IM like Google talk that is integrated with Gmail and offers voice and video chat. Through Skype, it would be able to offer better communication options to its subscribers.
On the other hand, Skype would be able to access Facebook’s more than half a billion users and extend its user base. The Luxembourg-based VoIP company has 560 million registered users while 124 million users use it at least once a month. The company is also getting ready to make public offering.
Now, the big question that is in everybody’s mind is whether Facebook would also integrate Skype into its web interface or mobile application.
