On September 29, 2010, Japanese gaming company, Nintendo, announced that it will launch its 3-D handheld videogame system in February. Satoru Iwata, President, Nintendo, at a press conference in Chiba near Tokyo, announced the release date but he did not give out any specific reasons behind the launch date. This means, Nintendo would miss the holiday season of 2010. Nintendo earlier said that it planned to launch 3D in March 2011.
The Nintendo 3DS is the successor of Nintendo’s popular handheld gaming device Nintendo DS. The prominent feature of 3DS is that it would enable users to play 3D games and would not require any special 3D glasses. The Nintendo 3DS would go on sale in Japan on February 26, 2011 and would be priced at 25,000 yen or about $300.
The 3DS will be shipped in the U.S and Europe and Australia in March 2011 but it did not give out the device’s price in those two markets.
3D is the next big trend in the consumer electronics industry. Major consumer electronics makers are rolling out devices such as TV, gaming consoles that support 3D technology. Game developers and hardware makers are now going for 3D and motion-sensing gaming and top game makers and console makers are rolling out new products to lure customers in the upcoming holiday season.
Sony released its PlayStation Move System in Europe and the U.S. which enables players to play 3D games wearing special glasses. The PlayStation Move System uses highly responsive wand shaped motion controllers. Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing system for the Xbox 360 will be released in Japan on November 20, 2010.
