On September 27, 2010, RIM finally took the curtain of its tablet PC which is not called BlackPad but PlayBook.
The PlayBook is a 7-inch tablet PC and RIM just do not want to be another tablet PC maker. PlayBook means serious business. The small tablet PC packs some powerful components and comes with great features many of which were missing in Apple iPad. Like BlackBerry, with the PlayBook, RIM mainly targeted corporate people.
The PlayBook measures 130mm x 193mm x 10mm and weigh 0.9 lb. The PlayBook sports a 7 inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.
The PlayBook is packed with a dual-core, 1GHz ARM Cortext-A9 processor and packs 1GHz memory more than the iPad. The PlayBook is run by a new OS, QNX’s mobile OS which is based on QNX Neutrino. RIM acquired QNX Software Systems in April.
The PlayBook has two-cameras with the capability of recording full HD (1080p) videoplayback capability.
Another good news is interested third party app developers for Play Book can use a wide range of software including Java, Flash, Adobe Air, OpenGL, and RIM's "WebWorks" HTML widget platform. Here is a TV commercial of BlackBerry PlayBook:
The PlayBook does not have a modem and users are required to use BlackBerry phones for tethering. This could be a serious problem for the device because many people who do not own a BlackBerry would not be able to use it. It is not a good strategy on RIM’s part. Sascha Segan of PC Mag.com says:
This is a very dangerous trick. Smartphone "companions" tend not to sell well to consumers. People get confused by "one thing that requires another thing." Even Apple has trouble getting some iPhone owners to sync with their PCs. If the right enterprise apps are available, though, businesses may take to this easily managed, secure solution. And if it connects to Wi-Fi without a BlackBerry, the PlayBook could actually be the first RIM device someone owns - and they might then follow up with a phone.
Price of the PlayBook has not bee revealed yet and many believe that the device would be a pricey one. The tablet PC will be shipped in early 2011.
