Cyber Monday 2010: More people shopped online than going to retail stores

After the recession plagued 2009 holiday shopping season, 2010 brings new hope among retailers. This year an estimated 107 million people shopped online during Cyber Monday, the biggest online shopping day of the year. Retailers are hopeful that 2010 holiday season will be the best season in the last four years.

The National Retail Federation said that about 88 percent of online retailers offered Cyber Monday special. It also said that number of people who shopped online between Thanksgiving and Sunday rose 15 percent. About 70 million people shopped online while they were at work.

Compared to the Cyber Monday of 2009, sales at 500 retail stores went up about 20 percent according to the report of IBM Coremetrics, a leading web analytics firm that keeps track of the performance of various retail sites.

Another company, ShopperTrak, which specializes in monitoring traffics in brick and mortar stores, said that sales between Friday and Sunday remained flat compared to the same period last year but the big surge in online sales offset the poor business of retail stores.

All this indicates that American shoppers becoming more interested to shop online and this makes more sense. Even if you get great doorbuster deals in stores it comes at a cost of sleep and even missing the Thanksgiving dinner with your family and friends which is not so enjoyable. Shopping online not only saves your valuable time, money and energy but enables you to spend more time with your family and friends.
