Alphaline Entertainment: Sears and Kmart start new movie download service

On December 28, 2010, Sears and Kmart, in collaboration with Sonic, launched a new online movie download service called Alphaline Entertainment. Customers would now be able to download DVD and Blu-ray discs of movies and TV shows on the same day they are released. Renting movies would cost $3.99 and purchase of new releases $19.99.

The service is powered by Sonic’s RoxioNow platform. Best Buy also has a similar service that uses RoxioNow and offers similar pricing.

Sonic and Sears are now working on to offer various devices that would support the service. It will be done in different phases. They would also ensure that the devices are compatible with “studio-supported digital programs.”

As Internet TV is going to be the next big trend, companies are now trying to establish themselves in this business. Earlier this year, Walmart acquired Vudu, a three year old Silicon Valley-based start-up company that offers movies online. Amazon also has its own online movie service.

However, Netflix is still the largest player in the online movie business and in November it changed its pricings and offered a new streaming only service as more and more people are streaming movies on Internet.
