Facebook: The most visited website and most searched word on web in 2010

The year 2010 is the year of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg. In its last minute achievement of 2010, Facebook became the most visited website on Internet in the U.S and the most searched term. Two web tracking firms revealed that Facebook replaced Google as the most popular site on the web in 2010.

Experian Hitwise, a web research firm, in its latest Internet search report, revealed that Facebook, for the first time, accounted for 8.93 percent of all page visits in the U.S between January and November 2010. Google came up at the second spot with a 7.19 percent followed by Yahoo! Mail at 3.52 percent. In 2009, Facebook was in third place and ranked ninth in 2008.

The firm also analysed top 1000 search terms of 2010 and revealed that “Facebook” was the most-searched term of 2010. For the second time, Facebook came up at the top accounting for 2.11 percent of all searches. Four variations of the word “Facebook” made it to the top search accounting for 3.48 percent of all search terms.

comScore, another web-based research firm revealed that Facebook surpassed Google for the first time in terms of page views.
