Taiwanese smartphone maker, HTC, is going to release a tablet PC called “HTC Scribe.” The name appeared in a trademark filing by the company. As per the record of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the company submitted the file on December 26, 2010. At the filing, HTC mentioned that it would be a “handheld wireless device, namely a tablet computer.” However, it is too early to reach any conclusion about the naming of the final product.
In October, Cheng Hui-Ming, Chief Financial Officer, HTC reported that his company was looking at the potential of the tablet PC market.
Based in Taoyuan, Taiwan, HTC is currently the largest producer of Google Android based smartphone in the world. In 2008, it launched the first Google Android powered smartphone, T-Mobile G1. The company revealed that sales of its smartphone “had more than doubled” in the last quarter on a year-over-year basis and its Android-based smartphone models have become very popular.
Getting into the tablet market is a natural transition for the company. Tablet PCs are the next big thing in the tech industry. According to Will Stofega, Program director at consulting firm IDC in Framingham, Massachusetts, the HTC tablet PC would provide a great alternative to the iPad. Richard Ko, analyst KGI research, believes that Scribe might make an appearance at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2011.
