Nintendo 3DS would affect eyes of young children under six years of age

Japanese gaming company, Nintendo, issued a warning that its new 3DS handheld games would harm eyes of children less than six years old. The company posted a message at its official Japanese website over the launch of its upcoming Nintendo 3DS.

The company said that vision of children under six years of age are in a developmental stage and the Nintendo 3D contents “delivers 3D images with different left and right images, [which] has a potential impact on the growth of children’s eyes.”

Nintendo 3DS creates “illusion of 3D” which does not require the user to wear special 3D glasses and this would cause eye strain. User could feel “sick or nauseous after extended use.” Fox News reports:

Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus, an optometrist with New York Cornea Consultants, thinks Nintendo and Sony may be getting ahead of themselves with these disclaimers.

"It's hard to say that it'll ruin development," Ehrenhaus told FoxNews.com. "I don't foresee it as a major issue, they're just being overly concerned."

The 3DS has a “3D Volume switch” and children can play the game by toggling down the switch and making it 2D.

The Nintendo 3DS was unveiled at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo and it will be released in Japan on February 26, 2011 and would cost about $300. The device would then be launched in the U.S., Europe and Australia.
