Skype 3.0: Make video-calls on your iPhone using 3G network

On December 30, 2010, Skype launched its updated video calling app Skype 3.0 which would now enable users to make video calls via iPhone using AT&T’s 3G mobile network.

Rob Pegoraro of the Faster Forward blog of the Washington Post used the new Skype 3.0 app and found it to be quite satisfactory. He made calls using an iPhone 4 to an iMac PC and iPod Touch. iPad users can receive video calls but would not be able to make one due to the absence of a front facing camera on their devices. Each time it took around two seconds to get connected and remained till he ended the call. The audio quality is good but video quality was poor. Even when the iPhone had full signal, there was low resolution video and he even switched to his faster home wireless network but there was no change in condition.

Users would have to pay for the bandwidth usage for using the 3G network. On an average, it would take 3.2 MB per minute and at this rate you would finish AT&T’s “entry-level beta” 200 MB monthly data plan in little more than an hour.

The Skype 3.0 app is now available for free at the app store and it would run on available on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G S and the fourth-gen iPod Touch. Apple’s own video-chat app Face Time can work only on Wi-Fi but Skype’s new app can work on both Wi-Fi and 3G network.
