Windows tablet PC has a tough road ahead

Microsoft is now desperate to establish its foothold in the mobile device market but industry experts are not so hopeful about the software giant’s future. The company is going to release a new version of its Windows OS optimized to run on ARM based chips.

The new OS will be unveiled at the upcoming CES 2011 that would start from January 6, 2011. At the CES 2010, Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, unveiled Windows based tablet PCs such as HP Slate but those tablets had not been released. In October, Microsoft launched its revamped smartphone OS Windows Phone 7 but it was not well received by people. All these clearly show the software giant’s failure in the mobile industry segment.

The biggest challenge for Microsoft is not releasing a tailored version of the Windows software but making it popular. The company must bring out something that is useful and attractive. Google Android and Apple iOS has already established their position in the tablet PC market.

Another big problem is, Microsoft is a software based company. In order to build a device that could challenge iPad, Microsoft is required to forge partnership with top hardware vendors but it is now facing a “vendor battle” with Google. Already, companies like Samsung, Dell, Acer and LG have come up with their own Android based tablet PCs that will be released next year. All this indicates a tough road ahead of Microsoft.
