Microsoft and Sony are now locked in a console sales war. On November 29, 2010, Microsoft announced that it sold 2.5 million units of its new Kinect Motion sensing gaming controls. The next day, Sony announced that it sold 4.1 million units of its Play Station move games bundle.
The interesting difference between these two sales figures is Sony disclosed the sales it made to retailers while Microsoft disclosed units it directly sold to consumers.
Kinect was launched on November 4, 2010 and within the first ten days, it sold one million units. Don Mattrick, President, Interactive Entertainment Business, Microsoft expects to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors around the world by the end of 2010 crossing the sales figure of Apple’s popular iPad tablet PC.
What makes Kinect stands out from the rest of the crowd is that it does not use any controls like those of Sony and Nintendo. It is a single piece of hardware which connects to the user’s Xbox 360 game console. The standalone Kinect costs $149.99 while with Xbox 360 4G bundle costs $299.99 and Xbox 360 250GB bundle costs $399.99.
Sony on the other hand, launched its PlayStation Move back in September and reached one million sales figure in thirty days. The PlayStation Move Bundle is priced at $99.99 containing a PlayStation Eye, one PlayStation Move motion controller, a copy of Sports Champions on Blu-ray disc, and a PlayStation Move game demo disc. The move bundle with 320GB PlayStation 3 would cost $399.99.
