Looks like Apple and Microsoft is going to get into another nasty fight over “App store.” In 2008, Apple filed for a trademark on the term “App Store” but Microsoft is arguing that “App” and “Store” are generic terms and other companies should be able to use them as well.
Apple submitted a file in 2008 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In the filing, Apple defined “App Store” as "retail store services featuring computer software provided via the internet and other computer and electronic communication networks."
In July 2008, Apple launched its App Store for iOS device owners including the Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The app store offers both free and paid apps.
Today, the Apple App Store is the most successful app store in the world with a collection of more than 300,000 apps. In just nine month since its launch, the app store observed one billion download. On January 6, 2011, Apple also launched Mac App Store for its Mac OS X devices.
On January 11, 2010, Microsoft filed a motion with Trademark Trial and Appeal Board challenging Apple’s claim.
Microsoft launched its own app store, Windows Market Place, along with the launch of its Windows Phone 7 OS in October 2010. To mid-December, it had 4,000 apps.
