Apple iPad2 will have higher resolution screen and Qualcomm dual-mode chipset

Apple iPad 2 is rumored to have a higher resolution screen and new chipset to support both GSM and CDMA network. A new graphics discovered in Apple iBook app shows it to be true. However, the display of the iPad 2 will not be the Retina display that is found in iPhone 4.

The display of iPhone 4 has 326 ppi which has more resolution than a typical human eye. Hence, it is called Retina display. The original iPad comes with a 9.7 inch screen and has a resolution of 1024x768 (at 132 ppi). Building a 9.7 inch screen with more than 300 ppi would require exceptionally high resolution.

So, instead of building a Retina display for the iPad2, Apple decided to increase the native resolution of the display of the iPad2 four times than that of the iPhone 4 creating a very high resolution display with a pixel density of around 260ppi.

It has also been reported that Apple would strap iPad2 with Qualcomm chipset instead of Infineon chipset it has been using in its first-gen iPad. The Qualcomm chipset would support both CDMA and GSM network but not the 4G LTE network. However, it has not been confirmed if the chipsets would be based on Qualcomm’s “EV-DO/HSPA Gobi variety or an entirely new design.”

Such change has been brought to enable the second gen-iPad run on both Verizon and AT&T’s network.
