Google is not yet finished with its Android 2.X version. Rumor is out that the search engine giant is going to unveil a new version, Android 2.4, codenamed Ice Cream at the Google I/O conference in May 2011. Tech Crunch reported that the code name of the OS is “Ice Cream Sandwich” and it was mentioned by none other than the head of Android Andy Rubin during the launch of Google Nexus S in December.
Unlike the distributors of Linux OS, who publish release schedules for hardware vendors and third party app developers, Google does not give out any release schedule of its Android OS.
Google names all its Android OS after various desserts- Android 1.5 “Cupcake” released on April 30, 2009; Android 1.6 “Donut” released on September 15, 2009;
Android 2.0 “Eclair” released on October 26, 2009; Android 2.2 “Froyo” meaning Frozen Yogurt released on May 20, 2010; and Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” was released on December 6, 2010.
What makes all this so confusing is that the upcoming version is Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb. If Google is releasing Android 3.0 then the next version should be Android 3.1 but why Android 2.4?
All this confusion started with Sony Xperia Arc smartphone which was unveiled at CES 2011. Android 2.4 had been mentioned at the firmware configuration of Xperia Arc but Sony Ericsson officials said that it was a mistake.
What I think is Google is planning to roll out different versions of Android focusing on different devices. Android 3.0 has been reported to be focused on tablet PCs while Android 2.x version would focus on smartphones but it is all a guess. What do you think?
