Gene Munster’s survey reveals Apple iPad 2 is attracting lots of new users

In a survey conducted by Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, and his team, it has been revealed that majority of the buyers of the iPad 2 are new to the device. It shows that Apple is expanding its tablet PC market.

Munster and his team conducted the survey on 236 buyers in New York City and Minneapolis and also contacted different retail outlets including Apple stores, Target, Best Buy, looking for the iPad 2.

Munster estimated that a total of 400,000 to 500,000 units of iPad 2s had been sold in the first weekend which is higher compared to the 300,000 iPads sold in first weekend last year. Another big difference is that almost all the iPad 2s were sold in the first day. By Saturday, retailers ran out of their stocks and did not receive any new shipments.

Among the respondents, 23 percent own iPhone 4 and are new to the iPad while 51 percent were Mac users, 49 percent were PC users.

Last but not least, 41 percent buyers bought the 32GB iPad 2 which is also higher compared to 32 percent buyers of the first gen iPad.

In the end, Munster concluded that adding new customer to its product would help Apple gain further lead in the market. He is also hopeful that Apple would hold on to its position for the company “record of building unmatched brand loyalty.”
